The Greenpeace ship was moored in Auckland, New Zealand, with plans to confront French nuclear testing in the Moruroa Atoll.<\/p>\n\n<p>In an effort to sabotage the protest, French secret service agents attached two bombs to the side of the ship below the waterline.<\/p>\n\n<p>The first bomb blew a large hole in the hull. After an initial evacuation, some of the crew returned to investigate and film the damage.<\/p>\n\n<p>On-board photographer, Fernando Pereira, had returned below deck to grab his camera equipment when the second bomb detonated. The Rainbow Warrior sank four minutes later and Pereira drowned. Prime minister Laurent Fabius eventually admitted that the government had ordered secret service agents to carry out the operation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences of the Rainbow Warrior bombing<\/h2>\n\n<p>The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior caused widespread public outrage and failed to stop the protests at Moruroa Atoll. Greenpeace gained a huge amount of support in New Zealand and around the world following the bombing, and if anything, it had the opposite effect to what the French government wanted.<\/p>\n\n<p>Fernando Pereira\u2019s death made many protesters more determined to go and protest at Moruroa. Donations and offers of help continued to flood in. Greenpeace International was able to send its other large ship, The Greenpeace, to lead the protest at Moruroa Atoll.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1987, an international tribunal ordered France to pay Greenpeace US$8.1 million in damages for deliberately sinking the Rainbow Warrior.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of those involved in the bombing have simply disappeared, and only two agents ever stood trial. Dominique Prieur and Alain Mafart were sentenced to 10 and seven years at a military base in French Polynesia, but they were released in less than two years.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the Rainbow Warrior now?<\/h2>\n\n<p>After the bombing, the Rainbow Warrior was placed on the seabed in nearby Matauri Bay, in the north of New Zealand. Ironically, this was funded by the compensation payment from the French government. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/rainbow-warrior-ii-the-tradition-of-defiance-at-sea-goes-on-1590862.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second Rainbow Warrior<\/a>&nbsp;put in 22 years of service on campaigns here in Aotearoa and around the world.<\/p>\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/explore\/ships\/rainbow-warrior\/\">third Rainbow Warrior<\/a>&nbsp;took to the seas in 2011, and is still in action today. We work to protect the oceans from damaging fishing practices like bottom trawling and seabed mining both here and in the Pacific. And we work to eliminate plastic pollution by disrupting the culture of single-use throwaway packaging and shifting Aotearoa to systems of reuse and refill. <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig-1024x576.jpg\" title=\"The Rainbow Warrior in Taranaki confronting the oil industry in 2019\" alt=\"The Rainbow Warrior in Taranaki confronting the oil industry in 2019\" class=\"wp-image-5065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig-600x338.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig-510x287.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2019\/02\/565d419e-4cb3adee-drone-warrior-oilrig.jpg 1432w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Rainbow Warrior in Taranaki confronting the oil industry in 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Here are a few ways Greenpeace has made a difference in Aotearoa recently.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Ending oil exploration<br><\/strong>Following seven years of campaigning alongside hap\u016b, iwi and other environmental groups, the Government announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/greenpeace-oil-campaign-seven-years-in-the-wilderness\/\">the end of new offshore oil and gas exploration permits<\/a> in New Zealand&#8217;s EEZ. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Eliminating single-use plastics<br><\/strong>Together we won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/plastic-bag-ban-proposal-a-win-for-people-power-and-the-oceans-greenpeace\/\">ban on single-use plastic bags<\/a> and then a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/a-win-for-people-power-as-more-problem-plastics-banned\/\">plan to phase out many single-use plastic products<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Protecting the oceans<br><\/strong>After years of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/why-new-zealand-needs-cameras-on-commercial-fishing-boats\/\">campaigning for cameras on boats<\/a>, we celebrated the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/cameras-on-boats-a-win-for-the-oceans-and-for-people-power\/\">news that cameras would be installed<\/a>&nbsp;on 300 commercial fishing vessels with cautious optimism, celebrating that the tide is finally turning towards ocean protection while continuing to call for cameras on the full commercial fleet.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Stopping seabed mining<br><\/strong>in 2021, the Supreme Court unanimously dismissed the Trans Tasman Resources appeal of a 2018 High Court ruling which quashed the EPA\u2019s decision in 2017 to give TTR resource consent to begin a giant seabed mining operation in the South Taranaki Bight.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/supreme-court-slams-door-on-seabed-mining-time-for-a-ban\/\">The decision effectively renders the project dead in the water.<\/a>&nbsp;The ruling was a significant win for Greenpeace, iwi, hap\u016b, local communities, environmental campaigners and for the ocean.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then, in another huge win for people power and for ocean protection, Foreign Affairs Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/new-zealands-support-for-deep-sea-mining-moratorium-a-win-for-ocean-protection\/\">announced that the New Zealand Government\u2019s support for a global moratorium on deep sea mining<\/a>\u00a0after months of campaigning by Kiwis Against Seabed Mining, Greenpeace, ECO and many others. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Fighting for Peace<\/strong><br>When Russia invaded Ukraine, Greenpeace mobilised all over the world to call for peace. Here in Aotearoa, we sailed in flotilla and called for the Government to Freeze Oligarch Assets to put pressure on Putin&#8217;s regime. Although they stopped short of freezing his assets, the New Zealand Government has agreed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-welcomes-minister-mahutas-decision-to-sanction-billionaire-oligarch-alexander-abramov\/\">sanction billionaire<\/a>&nbsp;oligarch Alexander Abramov.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/tag\/victories\/\">You can read more in our timeline of wins and milestones.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Greenpeace is people like you<\/h2>\n\n<p>Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice.
