{"id":594,"date":"2017-01-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-22T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/press-release\/greenpeace-on-auckland-sewage-overflows\/"},"modified":"2024-07-12T14:58:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T02:58:28","slug":"greenpeace-on-auckland-sewage-overflows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-on-auckland-sewage-overflows\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace on Auckland sewage overflows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace shares people&#8217;s concerns about human sewage on Auckland&#8217;s beaches, just as we care about cow sewage in New Zealand&#8217;s rivers.<\/p>\n\n<p>Both are separate issues but add up to the same thing, a lack of respect for water.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshub.co.nz\/home\/aotearoa\/2017\/01\/auckland-council-plans-1-7-billion-spending-on-new-wastewater-infrastructure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">As Greenpeace campaigner Steve Abel says:<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;We really need to prioritise water protection, it&#8217;s marker of a healthy society that your waterways are healthy&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Water is the most essential ingredient in life &#8211; letting sewerage and animal waste go into our fresh water and seawater is both disgusting and crazy.<\/p>\n\n<p>To put things into perspective there are six and a half million dairy cows in New Zealand. Each produces 14-15 times more effluent than the average human.<\/p>\n\n<p>62 per cent of our monitored rivers are unswimmable.<\/p>\n\n<p>In Auckland there seems to be an across the board acceptance that we have a sewage problem matched by a willingness from council and ratepayers to tackle the issue even if it costs billions.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace would welcome a similar acceptance and willingness from the Dairy Industry, which still seems to be in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/en\/press\/Greenpeace-calls-on-the-Dairy-Industry-to-come-clean-about-its-plans-for-expansion\/\">state of denial<\/a> with the likes of Dairy NZ and Irrigation NZ planning new irrigation schemes that will drive an increase in the number of dairy cows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Greenpeace shares people&#8217;s concerns
