{"id":60039,"date":"2023-06-01T15:59:57","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T03:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=60039"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:20:46","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:20:46","slug":"taxing-urea-better-than-he-waka-eke-noa-stronger-action-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/taxing-urea-better-than-he-waka-eke-noa-stronger-action-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Taxing urea better than He Waka Eke Noa but stronger action needed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa is calling out the agriculture industry\u2019s \u201cundue influence\u201d over the Government\u2019s agricultural emissions policy, saying that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/predatory-delay-climate-action-fonterra-dairynz-federated-farmers\/\">predatory denial and delay<\/a>\u201d have stalled the development of plans to price and reduce climate pollution.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace climate and agriculture campaigner, Christine Rose, says \u201cthe Government\u2019s indication yesterday that the introduction of a urea tax is not under meaningful consideration because industry doesn\u2019t support it, is indicative of a wider problem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe agriculture industry has too much influence over the Government&#8217;s climate policy. Ongoing delays with emissions pricing have been manufactured by Big Dairy so that they can continue polluting the climate without repercussions, while the rest of us pay the price.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis year will be a climate election, and we expect all political parties to put forward strong policies to rapidly reduce climate pollution from agriculture. We need a political climate shift, where urgent climate action is the priority &#8211; and that means tackling Big Dairy, New Zealand\u2019s worst climate polluter,\u201d says Rose.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe agri-industry\u2019s emissions reduction scheme, \u2018He Waka Eke Noa\u2019, has never been a realistic way to cut climate pollution. We need bold, smart, and ambitious policies that enable us to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, in line with the Global Methane Pledge. That must include a full phase-out of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, through a sinking lid policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone has the right to a safe and stable climate and healthy environment,\u201d says Rose. \u201cThe Government must regulate the intensive dairy industry now, because Big Dairy cannot be allowed to take that right away from
