In total, sharks have survived five mass extinctions.<\/p>\n<p>And scientists are still discovering new sharks all the time.<\/p>\n<p>In just the last three decades, scientists have identified nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/conversation-sharkweek-without-mentioning-shark-bites\/\">250 new shark species<\/a>. The latest is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/21\/us\/new-shark-species-bioluminescent-trnd\/index.html\">American Pocket Shark<\/a>, a shark smaller than the human hand that secretes glow-in-the-dark liquid from a gland near its front fins. They then enter the global shark trade, estimated at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/figis\/servlet\/SQServlet?file=\/usr\/local\/tomcat\/8.5.16\/figis\/webapps\/figis\/temp\/hqp_123220585038921019.xml&amp;outtype=html\">as high as<\/a>\u00a0US$1 billion per year.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Greenpeace\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/22754\/thousands-of-endangered-sharks-slaughtered-by-overfishing-new-report-reveals\/\">found that<\/a>\u00a0fishing vessels in the North Atlantic were catching as many as 25,000 mako sharks each year. This leaves sharks and countless other marine animals at risk.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that governments are starting work on a global oceans treaty that has the potential to protect nearly a third of the high seas and would help shark populations to recover.<\/p>\n<p>But a lot depends on whether we speak up.
