{"id":61118,"date":"2023-09-22T13:09:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T01:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=61118"},"modified":"2024-07-11T12:15:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:15:45","slug":"nordic-plastics-report-the-planet-needs-higher-ambition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/nordic-plastics-report-the-planet-needs-higher-ambition\/","title":{"rendered":"Nordic plastics report: the planet needs higher ambition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A report from the Nordic Council of Ministers on recommendations to address plastic production doesn\u2019t go far enough, according to Greenpeace Aotearoa.<br><br>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pub.norden.org\/temanord2023-539\/\">Nordic Council of Ministers published a report<\/a> to provide modeling of 15 policy interventions that could reduce annual mismanaged plastics by 90% and virgin plastic production by 30% by 2040 compared to 2019 levels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa plastics campaigner Juressa Lee says the world needs higher ambition if it\u2019s going to address the plastic pollution crisis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt is great that the Nordic Council of Ministers agrees that we cannot end plastic pollution without reducing plastic production.<br><br>\u201cWorld governments have been charged to develop an instrument that will end plastic pollution and even this report acknowledges that a 30% reduction in plastic production by 2040 falls short of what the planet desperately needs.<br><br>\u201cWe must reduce plastic production by at least 75% to support the 1.5\u00b0 C Paris agreement. For our climate and planet, and to protect human health, human rights, and our communities, we need to see much greater ambition if we are serious about ending this crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The release of the Nordic Council of Ministers report comes just after the release of the zero draft of the Global Plastics Treaty. The Global Plastics Treaty, which delegations will continue to negotiate at the upcoming third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC3), is a crucial instrument where discussions will continue in developing a legally-binding Global Plastics Treaty.<br><br>Greenpeace Aotearoa has been advocating for a strong and equitable Global Plastics Treaty, highlighting the importance of centering the voices and meaningful participation of indigenous peoples and frontline communities in discussions, and launching a petition which has garnered more than <a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/plastic-global-treaty?source=actioncallout\">47,000 signatures in Aotearoa New Zealand<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Lee says the Global Plastics Treaty must cut plastic production by at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificenvironment.org\/press-releases\/new-report-calls-for-at-least-75-reduction-of-plastics-by-2050-reveals-dire-connection-between-plastic-and-climate\/\">least 75% to ensure that we stay below the 1.5\u00b0 C<\/a> Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNobody wants to see wildlife choking on plastic. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues. The whakapapa of my wh\u0101nau is a journey through Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. From the Whangape Harbour to Rawhiti via Ngawha, down to Tauranga Moana, over to Tupapa and Ngatangiia in Rarotonga, and north again to Tahiti. My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
