{"id":61699,"date":"2023-11-16T15:06:18","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T02:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=61699"},"modified":"2024-07-12T09:43:34","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T21:43:34","slug":"new-bottom-trawling-report-wake-up-call-for-deluded-fishing-industry-say-environmentalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/new-bottom-trawling-report-wake-up-call-for-deluded-fishing-industry-say-environmentalists\/","title":{"rendered":"New bottom trawling report \u2018wake-up call for deluded fishing industry\u2019, say environmentalists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An authoritative new report reveals the considerable carbon cost of bottom trawling, with environmentalists calling it a \u201cdamning wake-up call\u201d for the commercial fishing industry.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/887140ee5f1eeb23b55010cff\/files\/7bdc8441-896a-b68e-5e11-610047c4652b\/Disturbing_the_deep_Risks_to_carbon_stores_in_Aotearoa_New_Zealand_s_marine_sediments_EMBARGOED.pdf\">The report<\/a>, released today by the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, reveals that bottom trawling is the largest threat to releasing carbon stored in the seabed around Aotearoa.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace Oceans Campaigner Ellie Hooper<\/strong> says the report is more proof that bottom trawling bans are urgently needed.<br><br>\u201cThe seafloor contains one of the largest stores of carbon on Earth, and by dragging heavy, weighted nets over it, the bottom trawling industry releases carbon back into the water,\u201d says Hooper.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe fishing industry is in denial about bottom trawling &#8211; not only are they trashing biodiversity hotspots, ripping up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/bottom-trawling-destroyed-coral-report-21-june-2023\/#:~:text=Over%20the%20time%20period%20covered,of%20total%20coral%20%27bycatch%27.\">tonnes of ancient coral every year<\/a>, but they\u2019re also intensifying climate change. In the meantime, they\u2019re cynically peddling the myth that their business is carbon friendly.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Seafood New Zealand <a href=\"https:\/\/deepwatergroup.org\/the-carbon-footprint-of-nz-wild-caught-seafood\/\">released research<\/a> earlier this year claiming that wild-caught seafood has the lowest carbon footprint compared to other animal proteins. However, the study left out the carbon impact of bottom trawling the seafloor.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Karli Thomas of the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition<\/strong> says it\u2019s time the industry dropped its inaccurate and misleading claims.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhether they\u2019re destroying precious ocean ecosystems on seamounts or dredging carbon sinks on the seafloor, the cost of bottom trawling is abundantly clear, but for decades, governments and the commercial industry have delayed transitioning away from it.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a fishing method that should be left where it belongs &#8211; in the last century. We need urgent leadership on bottom trawling and commitments to removing it from the most sensitive areas first &#8211; seamounts and features in the deep sea and from the Hauraki Gulf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The study found that carbon stocks were higher and more likely to be disturbed on the deeper continental shelves and slopes, such as the Chatham Rise, as well as in mud-filled bays like the Hauraki Gulf.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Barry Weeber of ECO says: <\/strong>\u201cThe report makes plain that deepwater areas from 200 &#8211; 1500m depth contain a substantial portion of New Zealand\u2019s seabed carbon, but these areas are also being heavily fished by bottom trawlers &#8211; and there lies the harm.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhether you look at it from a biodiversity or climate perspective, this fishing method has dire consequences for the ocean. We urge the incoming government to stop kicking the can down the road and take bold action to create bottom trawling bans.<\/p>\n\n<p>Read the <a
