The New Zealand Government has suffered the ignominy of \u2018winning\u2019 the first Fossil of the Day award<\/a> at the Dubai COP28 climate conference for its plan to overturn the ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis is no joke,\u201d says Greenpeace Aotearoa\u2019s head of campaigns Amanda Larsson. \u201cWith the Luxon-led Government\u2019s extremist position on oil exploration, New Zealand risks becoming a Pacific pariah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The Fossil of the Day awards were first presented at the climate talks in 1999, in Bonn, initiated by the German NGO Forum. During United Nations climate change negotiations (www.unfccc.int), members of the Climate Action Network (CAN), vote for countries judged to have done their \u2018best\u2019 to block progress in the negotiations in the last days of talks.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

\u201cAlready the President of Palau has slammed New Zealand over it, Vanuatu\u2019s Climate Change Minister has called on them to rethink the plan, and Germany’s top climate diplomat spoke out to say reopening New Zealand to offshore oil and gas exploration would go against science and economics,\u201d says Larsson.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe can see the climate crisis unfolding in real-time all around us, with communities here in Aotearoa and in the Pacific suffering worsening impacts from storms, slips, rising sea levels and droughts.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cNew oil and gas exploration threatens to throw more fuel on the fire. Even the conservative International Energy Agency has clearly said that there can be no new oil and gas expansion if we are to avoid runaway climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Climate Action Network International presented the award in Dubai and asked whether <\/strong>New Zealand\u2019s new Change Minister, Simon Watts, didn\u2019t hear the climate alarm bells ringing. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cHe may underestimate the devastating climate consequences of this decision, but we, and their Pacific island neighbours in Palau, who slammed his intentions as tragic, certainly do not,\u201d said Muhammed Saidykhan of CAN.<\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace Aotearoa has launched an open letter to the oil and gas industry<\/a>, promising to resist any attempt to conduct oil exploration in Aotearoa. Over 15,000 people have signed on since it was launched in October.<\/p>\n\n

Also at COP28, more than 100 countries \u2013 including Australia \u2013 signed a pledge promising to treble world renewable energy use by 2030, but the New Zealand government is not among them.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n \t\t\t
