We live for moments where justice is served through movements, big and small, organised and powered by people like you. <\/p>\n\n<p>While 2023 gave us some grim moments, we remained steadfast in our fight for ocean health and climate justice, and we will continue doing so in the years to come. To quote Greta Thunberg: \u201cWhen enough people come together, then change will come, and we can achieve almost anything. So instead of looking for hope \u2014 start creating it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2023: A year of action. It&#039;s in our Nature - Greenpeace\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F5rJGqKl0-8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights from the year here in Aotearoa<\/h2>\n\n<p>In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle, which climate scientists confirmed was made<a href=\"https:\/\/thespinoff.co.nz\/science\/03-02-2023\/how-do-we-know-climate-change-played-a-role-in-the-auckland-floods\"> more powerful and unpredictable<\/a> by climate change, we were there to highlight that the New Zealand Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/will-cyclone-gabrielle-be-the-wake-up-call-for-government\/\">has failed to reduce emissions<\/a> that are making the climate crisis worse.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/wqltws8WIAEy2pdNMrOXrOC5-pmCFvZHVzttnFRuGb22GtaI_NjFMUJj6zZhNYqzry1cAr62xrzePSCwa7Nvi11bLfGTlEOjYRo8bYIIwbo15cuQrugM7ZwWtuZKtcHVKBpdmuPnol3DbL8y6XPOMaE\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Following the climate-induced storm deluge on Auckland Anniversary day, on March 16,&nbsp;Greenpeace activists returned to sender flood-damaged household items and turned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-floods-fonterras-auckland-hq\/\">Fonterra&#8217;s head offices into a flood zone<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/12\/e7575d38-gp0stvnmt_medium_res_with_credit_line-1024x683.jpg\" title=\"Greenpeace Aotearoa activists turn dairy giant Fonterra&#039;s Auckland HQ into flood zone in climate protest. The activists delivered household items damaged in recent flooding from Cyclone Gabrielle and the Auckland Anniversary floods, with messages saying: Big Dairy, Big Storms. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>On April 23, we gathered a flotilla of crafts surrounding a massive \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/hundreds-turn-out-to-oppose-hauraki-gulf-bottom-trawling\/\">ban bottom trawling<\/a>\u2019 banner just off Mission Bay in Auckland this morning in a show of mass opposition to bottom trawling in the Hauraki Gulf marine park. Hundreds of people turned out on the beach and on the water for the event organised by Greenpeace Aotearoa and Forest &amp; Bird.
