A growing body of scientific evidence has found links between nitrate contamination of water and a host of potential health impacts, from bowel cancer to premature births. New Zealand scientists warn that rural people are the most likely to be exposed to hazardous levels of nitrate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Time and again, people agree with the principle that access to safe drinking water is a basic human right. That&#8217;s why we provide free nitrate testing of drinking water for <\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/freshwater\/nitrate-contamination-in-drinking-water-what-you-need-to-know-and-some-frequently-asked-questions\/\">Read more about nitrate contamination in drinking water.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"past-water-testing-events\">Previous water testing events<\/h2>\n\n<p>Greenpeace has run water testing events across the country, with a particular focus on regions with high levels of dairy farming.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 2021, Greenpeace began testing water for nitrate contamination. We launched our mail-in water testing and ran six nitrate water testing events in the following towns:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dunsandel &#8211; Saturday 29th May<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Woodend &#8211; Sunday 30th May<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ashburton &#8211; Saturday 10th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Temuka &#8211; Sunday 11th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Winton &#8211; Saturday 17th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Riversdale &#8211; Sunday 18th July<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>Following the in-person water testing,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/watch-cancer-water\/\"> we released our documentary, Cancer Water<\/a>, about a community in Canterbury impacted by high levels of nitrate contamination in drinking water. We filmed this in 2021, and released it at the start of 2022.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Cancer Water: The nitrate contamination of rural water supplies in Aotearoa New Zealand\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BuOC2ewGTpY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-2022-we-expanded-our-water-testing-programme\">In 2022, we expanded our water testing programme.<\/h3>\n\n<p>We ran free water testing events in the North Island as well as continuing testing in the South Island.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cambridge (Hautapu) &#8211; Thursday 14th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Matamata &#8211; Friday 15th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Te Awamutu &#8211; Saturday 16th July<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u200b\u200bGlenavy &#8211; Wednesday 16th November<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waimate &#8211; Thursday 17th November<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>We also held a well-attended community event in Glenavy after our testing took place to share more information on the risks of nitrate contamination and what residents could do. The Glenavy water testing results showed that the town had the highest levels of nitrate contamination in its drinking water that researchers had seen anywhere in the country. You can read more about this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/timaru-herald\/news\/130504083\/glenavy-residents-the-canaries-in-the-coal-mine-of-water-pollution\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-2023-we-returned-to-the-southland-and-canterbury-regions\">In 2023, we returned to the Southland and Canterbury regions.<\/h3>\n\n<p>These regions are home to some of New Zealand\u2019s most intensive dairy farming &#8211; so we ran three community water testing events here.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lumsden &#8211; Tuesday 18th April<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gore &#8211; Wednesday 19th April<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ashburton &#8211; Saturday&nbsp; 22nd April<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>Our testing found high levels of nitrate contamination across the board, but what was most concerning was that nitrate contamination in public drinking water in Lumsden and Gore was at a level that increased the risk of bowel cancer and preterm births. Bore water samples in these areas were extremely high, putting people and families who were drinking water from these bores at risk of bowel cancer, preterm birth, and blue baby syndrome.<\/p>\n\n<p>VICE came to our water testing events in Gore and Ashburton, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/4a3n3n\/new-zealand-cows-nitrates-climate-change\">produced a video which you can find here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Are Cow Burps Destroying New Zealand?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pNutjzkXDqY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Our agriculture campaigner, Christine Rose, wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/nitrate-contamination-caused-by-the-dairy-industry-puts-rural-people-at-risk\/\">blog<\/a> on her experiences running these water testing events and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2023\/04\/24\/nitrate-levels-in-ashburton-drinking-water-outrageous-greenpeace\/\">appeared on Breakfast<\/a> TV to discuss the extremely high levels of nitrate contamination in drinking water that we found.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-2024-greenpeace-ran-eight-water-testing-events-for-nitrate-contamination\">In 2024, Greenpeace ran eight water testing events for nitrate contamination.<\/h3>\n\n<p>In March, we ran two in Taranaki and one in Waikato, followed by three events in Canterbury in April.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>H\u0101wera<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New Plymouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tokoroa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Darfield<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culverden<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rangiora<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p>The April nitrate testing of drinking water in Canterbury was our busiest three days yet. Across the three events, we tested nearly 450 water samples. And we found several public supplies which had levels of nitrate near or at 5 mg\/L, the threshold at which risks of preterm birth have been shown to increase. Those were the Darfield and Kirwee town supplies, and the Oxford rural public supply.<\/p>\n\n<p>In late 2024, we returned to Canterbury, this time running free water testing for nitrate contamination in Amberley and Oxford.<\/p>\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve got more events coming up in 2025 to test for nitrate contamination of drinking water &#8211;
