Almost 50,000 people made submissions, and 2,900 asked to be heard by the select committee, but less than half of those people were allowed to speak. Over 20,000 people hit the streets in Auckland to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/act\/march-for-nature\/\">protest the fast track bill<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/luxons-fast-track-war-on-nature\/\">Luxon&#8217;s War on Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The projects that could be enabled by the fast track would be many and diverse, but we don\u2019t know what they all are because the Government has refused to reveal that detail.<\/p>\n\n<p>However, we do know that some projects are likely to be fast-tracked &#8211; either because the companies responsible for them have publicly signalled that they\u2019ll apply or because Chris Bishop explicitly invited them to apply.<\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019ve pulled together a non-exhaustive list of all the projects that we know could be fast-tracked through this dangerously anti-environment legislation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Pakiri Beach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/490155ba-image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/490155ba-image.png 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/490155ba-image-600x402.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/490155ba-image-768x515.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/490155ba-image-507x340.png 507w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Pakiri Beach is a beautiful, white sand dune beach, eyed up for sand mining by dredging company McCallum Brothers. This scheme risks destroying the dunes, the seabed and a wide variety of wildlife, including rare fairy terns. The Environment Court has said this development cannot go ahead, but this is likely to be overridden under the new fast-track legislation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Ruahine Forest Park, Hawkes Bay<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The floodlands\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nugR-63mBwM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>This is conservation land needed for the Ruataniwha dam, the massive water storage scheme that will enable widespread intensive dairy farming in the Hawkes Bay. The Ruataniwha Dam was blocked by the Supreme Court in 2017, after immense public opposition, but it\u2019s now on the cards again.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Denniston Plateau, West Coast<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/16\/Denniston_Plateau_MRD_Oct_2022_06.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>This is conservation land and a biodiversity hotspot, including home to great spotted kiwi (roroa), fernbirds, rare giant land snail and West Coast green gecko, will be up for grabs for mining companies. It&#8217;s an area environmental organisations have long fought to protect.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Te Kuha, Westport<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/312acbf9-image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/312acbf9-image.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/312acbf9-image-600x300.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/312acbf9-image-510x255.png 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Te Kuha Coal Mine proposed on a conservation land mountaintop in Westport, near the Denniston Plateau. The land is home to numerous threatened species, such as great spotted kiwi (roroa), South Island fernbird, geckos, and 17 plant species.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Victoria Conservation Park, near Reefton<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/922d7565-image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63975\" style=\"width:737px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/922d7565-image.png 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/922d7565-image-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/922d7565-image-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/922d7565-image-453x340.png 453w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Indigenous forest at risk from gold and antimony mining. Victoria Forest Park is the largest park of its type in the country. There is a network of walking tracks within, many dating from the mining days with relics of those days still visible amid regenerated forest.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. South Taranaki Bight, Offshore Taranaki<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/1c9089e7-image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63977\" style=\"width:715px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/1c9089e7-image.png 900w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/1c9089e7-image-600x405.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/1c9089e7-image-768x519.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/1c9089e7-image-503x340.png 503w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Trans Tasman Resources (TTR) has fought for years to mine the seabed in this blue whale habitat off the coast of Taranaki. The Supreme Court has blocked this, but TTR seems to believe they will now get the go ahead through the fast-track bill. In fact, they\u2019re so confident that they\u2019ve pulled out of their most recent round of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) hearings.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Rivers across Canterbury, Hawkes Bay, and Otago<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/387e1386-image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/387e1386-image.png 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/387e1386-image-600x369.png 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/387e1386-image-768x472.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/05\/387e1386-image-510x314.png 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Large-scale irrigation projects, like Klondyke water storage in Canterbury and Falls Dam irrigation, are likely to be back on the table in these areas, driving intensive dairy farming.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12. Waikoropup\u016b Springs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/3c\/Te_Waikoropup%C5%AB_Springs.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>We could see a water bottling project at Waikoropup\u016b Springs to capture and export some of the clearest water in the world, sacred to mana whenua, with no laws on how much water can be taken and water conservation orders overridden.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13. Mangere Inlet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/c9\/Favona_Seen_From_The_Northern_Side.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The enormous East\/West Link road will go through a unique lava flow habitat, which is the last stronghold for several indigenous volcanic plants, and disturb coastal habitat used by rare birds.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And many more&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>There are likely to be many more places across the country threatened by the fast-track bill. And communities living nearby won\u2019t even be allowed to have a say on developments that impact them.<\/p>\n\n<p>New Zealanders are angry about this bill. It is undemocratic and blatantly anti-environment. <\/p>\n\t\t\t<section\n\t\t\tclass=\"boxout post-65557  sticky-bottom-mobile collapse
