{"id":64175,"date":"2024-06-11T11:08:31","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T23:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=64175"},"modified":"2024-07-12T09:18:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T21:18:28","slug":"convicted-bottom-trawlers-given-green-light-to-trash-south-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/convicted-bottom-trawlers-given-green-light-to-trash-south-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"Convicted bottom trawlers given green light to trash South Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s destructive bottom trawling is back in the spotlight, as vessels the <em>Tasman Viking<\/em> and <em>Amaltal Mariner<\/em> are given permits to continue trashing deep sea corals in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n\n<p>High Seas Permits were issued by the Ministry of Primary Industries over the last month for the two vessels, despite the fact that both have recent convictions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The <em>Tasman Viking, <\/em>owned by Westfleet,<em> <\/em>dragged up bamboo coral from the international waters of the Lord Howe Rise in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/nelson-mail\/news\/132307427\/multimillion-dollar-fishing-vessel-forfeited-after-bottom-trawling-breach\">releasing the net back overboard before the coral could be properly recorded<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <em>Amaltal Mariner, <\/em>owned by Talley\u2019s<em>, <\/em>trawled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/business\/430289\/amaltal-guilty-of-taking-fish-from-a-marine-reserve\">in a marine reserve off Kaik\u014dura<\/a> in 2019. Another in the fleet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/deep-sea-fishing-company-fined-and-boat-confiscated-skipper-fined-for-illegal-fishing\/H6QIQ6UXDYU3U5QGKEHEGDBX5A\/\">the <em>Amaltal Apollo<\/em>,<\/a> repeatedly trawled in a protected area in the Lord Howe Rise in 2018.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa and the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition are criticising the issuing of the permits, renewing the call for New Zealand to end bottom trawling in the South Pacific ocean altogether.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNew Zealand trawling companies are outliers &#8211; the last ones bottom trawling in the South Pacific high seas\u201d says Greenpeace Aotearoa campaigner Ellie Hooper.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhile other countries are moving away from bulldozing ancient coral forests, the New Zealand government continues to support this archaic industry that destroys the foundations of ocean life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the New Zealand government prevented much-needed protections being implemented in international waters, at a meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/nz-backtracks-on-south-pacific-ocean-protection-lobbies-for-more-bottom-trawling\/\">South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)<\/a>. Despite all member countries agreeing to the measure by consensus the year before, New Zealand blocked it from becoming a reality.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe New Zealand government isn\u2019t listening to the people of this country, nor the rest of the world,\u201d says Hooper.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cPolling shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2024\/02\/c83eaf8c-horizon-research-greenpeace-oceans-survey-february-2024-final.pdf?utm_source=pressrelease&amp;utm_medium=pressrelease&amp;utm_campaign=Oceans\">73% of New Zealanders<\/a> want bottom trawling gone from the South Pacific, and other countries are pushing for that too. The government is putting themselves out on a limb to protect an industry that belongs in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>DSCC spokesperson Karli Thomas says protecting deep sea habitats is crucial for ensuring there are fish for the future.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cProtecting deep sea habitats like seamounts &#8211; hotspots for ocean life &#8211; is vital. Orange roughy use these areas to spawn. Recent research has shown that aggregations of orange roughy have disappeared altogether from heavily trawled seamounts, which is a truly worrying sign.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe New Zealand government needs to stop issuing high seas permits to bottom trawlers &#8211; let alone vessels with recent convictions for illegal fishing.
