{"id":65188,"date":"2024-08-07T11:14:19","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T23:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=65188"},"modified":"2024-08-07T11:15:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T23:15:49","slug":"fishing-industry-conference-reeks-of-greenwash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/fishing-industry-conference-reeks-of-greenwash\/","title":{"rendered":"Fishing industry conference reeks of greenwash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s Seafood New Zealand Conference, which started in Auckland this morning, is \u201cChampions of Sustainability\u201d, a title that Greenpeace Aotearoa says is ironic at best, and misleading at worst.<br><br>Greenpeace campaigner Ellie Hooper cited continued destructive bottom trawling, high bycatch rates, and carbon disturbance, as examples of fishing practices that undermined any industry claims to sustainability.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cTime and time again we see the fishing industry trying to greenwash its practices as \u2018sustainable\u2019, tinkering at the edges of change while failing to address the most pressing issues like destructive bottom trawling,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cRight now New Zealand bottom trawlers are out bulldozing the seafloor, ripping up precious coral and catching and killing marine life like dolphins, fur seals and endangered albatross as \u2018bycatch\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/05\/be5fad1e-gp0oc7_web_size.jpg\" title=\"Crew hauling a huge piece of orange coral on board a trawler.\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-59857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/05\/be5fad1e-gp0oc7_web_size.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/05\/be5fad1e-gp0oc7_web_size-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/05\/be5fad1e-gp0oc7_web_size-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2023\/05\/be5fad1e-gp0oc7_web_size-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Crewman on the New Zealand bottom trawler, Waipori, dump a large piece of Paragorgia coral dredged from the deep sea in their net.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u201cFar from being sustainable, the New Zealand fishing industry is putting profit above ocean health, continuing to trawl in New Zealand waters and shamefully, remain the only fleet to trawl in the South Pacific High Seas.&nbsp;<br><br>\u201cOver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/horizon-poll-reveals-nearly-80-of-nzers-want-bottom-trawling-banned-on-seamounts\/\">80% of New Zealanders<\/a>&nbsp; want trawling gone so the ocean can recover and thrive, and it\u2019s time for the Government and industry to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen these attempts before, where the industry paints itself as sustainable but really it\u2019s anything but. Last year it claimed to have a low carbon footprint, without factoring in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/new-bottom-trawling-report-wake-up-call-for-deluded-fishing-industry-say-environmentalists\/\">carbon disturbed and released into the water by bottom trawling<\/a>.\u201d<br><br>Australian environmentalists were last month raising concerns about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/article\/2024\/jul\/16\/fears-for-threatened-orange-roughy-as-nz-super-trawler-returns-to-tasmanian-waters\">New Zealand super trawler<\/a>, Talley\u2019s <em>Amaltal Explorer<\/em> being allowed to fish for endangered orange roughy off the coast of Tasmania.<br><br>\u201cEvery year we read about the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/bottom-trawling-destroyed-coral-report-21-june-2023\/#:~:text=Over%20the%20time%20period%20covered,of%20total%20coral%20%27bycatch%27.\">enormous amounts of coral<\/a> being ripped up by trawl nets, which is the backbone of whole ocean communities. But the fishing industry does not care.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cDestroying critical habitats in the name of fishing industry profits can never be sustainable. And even the most expensive greenwashing campaign cannot convince people of that.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cFor the ocean to recover and thrive bottom trawling has got to go from where it does the most
