{"id":65384,"date":"2024-08-19T09:57:49","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T21:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=65384"},"modified":"2024-11-05T13:10:45","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T00:10:45","slug":"fonterra-regenerative-agriculture-claims-blatant-greenwash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/fonterra-regenerative-agriculture-claims-blatant-greenwash\/","title":{"rendered":"Fonterra \u2018regenerative agriculture\u2019 claims blatant greenwash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/in-depth\/525503\/fonterra-accused-of-greenwashing-to-impress-big-foreign-buyers-keen-on-regenerative-agriculture\">latest expos\u00e9 of Fonterra\u2019s dishonest marketing strategies <\/a>indicates that the co-operative\u2019s license to pollute is coming to an end.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace spokesperson Sin\u00e9ad Deighton-O\u2019Flynn says, \u201cFonterra\u2019s dishonest claim that its milk is produced with regenerative farming is incompatible with the fact that they are the country\u2019s biggest climate and freshwater polluter, and that the NZ dairy industry is the world\u2019s biggest importer of rainforest destroying palm kernel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cFonterra claiming that its polluting practices are regenerative because its cows are pasture-based is like Shell claiming its oil is organic because it comes out of the ground. It\u2019s completely farcical,\u201d says Deighton-O\u2019Flynn.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for Fonterra to take real action to cut their climate pollution. That means phasing out synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, ending the use of rainforest-destroying palm kernel, and supporting farmers to transition to ecological, organic farming practices.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Fonterra\u2019s greenwash tactics have also already been called out internationally by Amsterdam-based Changing Markets Foundation in their recent report <a href=\"https:\/\/changingmarkets.org\/report\/the-new-merchants-of-doubt-how-big-meat-and-dairy-avoid-climate-action\/\">The New Merchants of Doubt<\/a>. The report outlines how the Big Meat and Dairy industries use the same denial and delay tactics as the oil and tobacco industries before them, to avoid responsibility for their major role in driving
