{"id":65584,"date":"2024-08-25T15:26:50","date_gmt":"2024-08-25T03:26:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=65584"},"modified":"2024-08-25T15:44:08","modified_gmt":"2024-08-25T03:44:08","slug":"fast-track-bill-remains-fundamentally-anti-environment-nineteen-new-mining-projects-in-the-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/fast-track-bill-remains-fundamentally-anti-environment-nineteen-new-mining-projects-in-the-pipeline\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast track bill remains fundamentally anti-environment &#8211; nineteen new mining projects in the pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace says changes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/explore\/fast-track-approvals-bill\/\">Fast Track Bill<\/a> announced today are a wolf in sheep\u2019s clothing, but show that the Government is feeling the heat and public pressure is working.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Aotearoa executive director Russel Norman says, \u201cOpposition to the Fast Track Bill has been deep and widespread and the changes announced today show the Government is feeling the heat, but the changes don\u2019t go anywhere near far enough.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe key part of the Fast Track Bill remains in place after these changes &#8211; projects will still be assessed on purely economic criteria which totally override environmental criteria.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cPublic pressure has resulted in changes to move the decision making on individual projects from three ministers to the decision making panels. This is progress but, without changing the criteria for making decisions, this will not fundamentally fix this flawed bill.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, the breakdown of projects released today shows that the fast track approvals process could herald 19 new mining projects. That\u2019s 19 mines without environmental conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cOver 20,000 people marched in protest against the Fast track bill and tens of thousands made submissions opposing it because the legislation threatens to turn the rivers and lakes of Aotearoa into sewers, forests and seabeds to open cast mines and push precious species to extinction. They will not be placated by mere tweaks.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace has this week published <a href=\"https:\/\/petition.act.greenpeace.org.nz\/fast-track-open-letter\">an open letter to all industry leaders considering using the Fast Track<\/a>, promising resistance and protest.
