Up to 20% of a Fonterra dairy cow\u2019s diet on a dry-matter basis could be imported palm kernel linked to deforestation of rainforests in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n<p>A Greenpeace spokesperson served Fonterra with the lawsuit this morning at the dairy co-operative\u2019s Auckland headquarters.<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace spokesperson Sin\u00e9ad Deighton-O\u2019Flynn says, \u201cIn yet another example of blatant greenwash from Fonterra, they have been trying to convince customers that the Anchor butter they\u2019re buying is 100% New Zealand grass-fed when this is far from the reality.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"You&#039;ve been served Fonterra!\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sh1wbmqcKo8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>\u201cFonterra is misleading their customers through this branding, presumably to make themselves appear more environmentally friendly and sustainable,\u201d says Deighton-O\u2019Flynn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNo doubt, Fonterra is claiming to be 100% grass-fed to downplay their reliance on palm kernel, as well as other fodder crops that are used for \u2018intensive winter grazing\u2019 which can see cows wallowing chest deep in mud and excrement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cPalm kernel is a product of the palm oil industry, an industry known for rainforest deforestation, human rights abuses, illegal operating and driving rare wildlife towards extinction. We think shoppers would be shocked to know that the block of \u2018grass-fed\u2019 butter they pick up at the supermarket could actually be linked to the destruction of orangutan habitats in Southeast Asia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>New Zealand is the largest importer of palm kernel in the world, with the dairy industry importing nearly 2 million tonnes every year. Much of this is imported by the business AgriFeeds, which exclusively sells palm kernel to Fonterra-owned Farm Source stores.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe misleading information on Fonterra\u2019s packaging is a real punch in the guts to the&nbsp;many farmers and brands that have done the work to end their use of palm kernel. Fonterra is stuck in the past and trying to hide behind greenwash.
