{"id":68248,"date":"2025-02-05T17:39:41","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T04:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=68248"},"modified":"2025-02-05T17:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T04:40:14","slug":"greenpeace-welcomes-northland-mining-pullout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-welcomes-northland-mining-pullout\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace welcomes Northland mining pullout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace is welcoming the decision by an Australian mining giant to pull the plug on its plans to mine for minerals in a forest reserve in the Far North.<\/p>\n\n<p>A campaign led by Whangaroa hap\u016b and its allies opposed the plan, and this week <a href=\"https:\/\/news.fuseworksmedia.com\/c2f4a368-f44e-42ad-897c-7d41d16c563b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minerology withdrew and closed its office in Aotearoa.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Seabed mining campaigner Juressa Lee says: &#8220;The victory over mining company Mineralogy International demonstrates the collective power of resistance in iwi, local communities and environmental groups working together.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lee says the victory sends a powerful message to other would-be miners, such as Australian-owned mining company Trans-Tasman Resources, which wants to start seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;Trans-Tasman Resources has faced years of determined opposition from Greenpeace, local iwi and hap\u016b, scientists, boaties and the fishing industry over its plans to plunder the seas off the Taranaki coast.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;TTR has been defeated in the courts again and again but is now betting the Luxon government\u2019s Fast Track process will enable it to circumvent any proper transparent scrutiny of its plans.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;But Greenpeace and our allies will continue to resist this every step of the way. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
