But we have big gaps in our knowledge,\u201d says Hooper.<br><br>\u201cWe\u2019re heading out to the deep ocean to try and survey these vital habitats, some of which are threatened by bottom trawl fishing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2025\/03\/02e2905e-dji_0432-1-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68768\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An aerial view of the ship undertaking seamount survey work as part of the Greenpeace Seamount Expedition<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>One of the sites the team plans to visit is the location where the New Zealand bottom trawler the <em>Tasman Viking <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/new-zealand-trawler-catches-coral-triggering-fishing-suspension-in-lord-howe-rise\/NUOA42BZIVETNMUCQ7F6KDLENE\/\">pulled up 37kg of deep sea coral <\/a>in the Lord Howe Rise area, renowned for diverse marine life. The aim is to record the species at the site and document any damage.<br><br>Requests from Greenpeace for the coordinates of the coral encounter area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/543619\/australia-releases-coordinates-to-greenpeace-after-new-zealand-government-refuses\">were declined by the New Zealand Government<\/a> due to \u2018commercial sensitivity,\u2019 with the location eventually released to the Expedition\u2019s Lead Researcher by Australian officials.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Hooper has called the New Zealand government\u2019s refusal to share the coordinates \u201cludicrous\u201d and&nbsp; \u201ca blatant example of the Luxon led government running interference for the fishing industry.\u201d<br><br>\u201cWe need more ocean research, not less.
