This is the location where in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/coral-pulled-up-by-nz-trawler-environmental-vandalism\/\">a New Zealand owned bottom trawler dragged up 37kg<\/a> of coral, prompting a temporary closure of it through the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO).<\/p>\n\n<p>Pulling up that amount of coral means it\u2019s likely there\u2019s a vulnerable marine ecosystem down there, and we want to go and take a look.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Greenpeace Seamounts Expedition visits the Lord Howe Rise.\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UM92z1vfLw0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>It\u2019s a deeper site than what we\u2019ve been surveying so far, but we\u2019re feeling more confident in the equipment and the weather is looking good to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-almost-missed-our-on-surveying-this-site\">We almost missed our on surveying this site<\/h3>\n\n<p>We almost had no shot at surveying this site. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-obtains-coordinates-of-coral-destruction-nz-government-refused-to-reveal\/\">The New Zealand government refused to share the location<\/a> information of the coral encounter, despite other SPRFMO nations and commercial fishing operators already being given it. In the end, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/543619\/australia-releases-coordinates-to-greenpeace-after-new-zealand-government-refuses\">Australian SPRFMO Commissioner released<\/a> the location information upon our Lead Scientist\u2019s request, making a survey a possibility.<\/p>\n\n<p>Deploying the DropCam has now become a slick operation from the deck crew, and by mid morning the equipment is down, heading to 1,000metres. <\/p>\n\n<p>For the first hour, we don\u2019t find the seabed, it\u2019s just a lot of blue. But by 11 we\u2019ve found where we need to be &#8211; and the first shot that comes into focus is a handful of Orange Roughy hanging out near the bottom. <br><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-we-see-orange-roughy\">We see orange roughy!<\/h3>\n\n<p>There are shrieks of excitement from the campaign team watching the feed, most of whom have never seen one of these fish in real life, but are completely fascinated by this deep sea creature that can live for 250 years and who is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/544360\/orange-roughy-takes-the-lead-in-fish-of-the-year-competition\">contender for the 2025 fish of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vote Roughy Captioned\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QKW6nNvezT0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>I\u2019ve worked on this campaign to protect seamounts and Orange Roughy for the best part of seven years, and it\u2019s pretty special to see them \u2018in real life\u2019, not caught in a net,  and I wonder what those little fish in the depths have seen in their lifetimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>There are more surprises for us during the dive and lots for the scientists to analyse.
