{"id":69258,"date":"2025-03-25T06:35:07","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T17:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=69258"},"modified":"2025-05-16T07:57:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T19:57:15","slug":"governments-rma-overhaul-hostile-takeover-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/governments-rma-overhaul-hostile-takeover-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Government&#8217;s RMA overhaul a hostile takeover of nature"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Greenpeace is hitting out at the Government\u2019s plan to scrap and rewrite the Resource Management Act (RMA), calling it a<strong> <\/strong>hostile takeover of nature.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s proposed reforms are based on the dangerous idea that if you own a piece of land, you should be able to do what you like with it &#8211; even if that means polluting rivers, cutting down forests, or pumping nitrates into drinking water,\u201d says Greenpeace spokesperson Gen Toop.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t reform &#8211; it\u2019s environmental vandalism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>In its announcement, the Government has signalled that it plans to premise the country\u2019s legal environmental protection framework on private property rights.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cTreating nature as private property ignores the reality that rivers, forests, and wildlife don\u2019t stop at the boundary line. As we\u2019ve seen in Canterbury, the nitrate pollution from intensive dairy farms doesn\u2019t stay on the farm.
