An investigation by German conservation organisation, NABU<\/a>, has concluded that MPI covered up the death in a gill net of a critically endangered M\u0101ui dolphin in the 2012\/13 fishing season.<\/p>\nGreenpeace New Zealand Executive Director, Russel Norman, says he\u2019s shocked by the allegations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are fewer than 50 M\u0101ui dolphins left in the world, and New Zealand is responsible for ensuring their survival,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is incredibly serious if, as NABU allege, the government agency responsible for enforcing the regulations protecting M\u0101ui is actually complicit in covering up one of their deaths. This loss would equate to 2% of the remaining M\u0101ui dolphin global population.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt certainly raises questions as to the integrity of New Zealand\u2019s system of regulating the fishing industry. It can only be dealt with by an independent investigation into the Ministry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact that this death is also reported to have happened outside the M\u0101ui\u2019s current marine protected area is another reason to extend these protections.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
