{"id":71868,"date":"2025-07-02T14:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T02:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=71868"},"modified":"2025-07-09T09:27:19","modified_gmt":"2025-07-08T21:27:19","slug":"luxons-freshwater-pollution-plan-submission-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/luxons-freshwater-pollution-plan-submission-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Bishop&#8217;s freshwater pollution plan &#8211; submit before 27 July!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Right now, the Government is pushing ahead with plans to rewrite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/honouring-our-freshwater-what-is-te-mana-o-te-wai\/\">rules that protect our lakes, rivers and drinking water<\/a> &#8211; in a move we&#8217;ve called the &#8216;freshwater pollution plan&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n<p>Their proposals would give more power to corporate polluters like the intensive dairy sector, while stripping away the few safeguards we have left for lakes, rivers and drinking water.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-will-the-freshwater-pollution-plan-actually-do\">What will the freshwater pollution plan actually do?<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Luxon Government is going to make water quality worse. Among a whole host of planned changes, some of the worst are that they want to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scrap the cap on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser<\/strong>, which exists to stop more nitrate from contaminating our drinking water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make it easier to build massive irrigation schemes<\/strong>, which would fuel dairy expansion and create pollution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prioritise commercial water use at the expense of the health of freshwater ecosystems and people<\/strong>, by removing the core protections in our freshwater regulations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>If Luxon\u2019s freshwater pollution plan is allowed to go ahead, these regulation changes would lead to more cows, more fertiliser, and more polluted water across the country.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Government says it wants to \u201crebalance\u201d the rules. But the truth is this: they\u2019re tipping the scales in favour of big dairy and corporate uses of water <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/explore\/water-pollution\/\">at the expense of lakes, rivers, and drinking water<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>We can\u2019t let that happen.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-submit-against-proposed-changes-now\">Submit against proposed changes now!<\/h2>\n\n<p>The freshwater pollution plan proposals are open for public consultation until <strong>27 July 2025<\/strong>. That means we have a chance to speak up and demand better. Because everyone deserves access to safe drinking water. Everyone should be able to swim in clean rivers. And everyone has a right to expect the Government to act in the public interest, not just for corporations and intensive dairy.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca7 <strong>Make your voice heard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be an expert to make a submission against the freshwater pollution plan. Just tell the Government what you care about:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Say no to removing the fertiliser cap. We need more action to reduce nitrate pollution, not less.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say no to weakening the protections that prioritise the health of water bodies and safe drinking water, ahead of corporate uses of water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Say no to new rules that enable more irrigation and more pollution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Together, we can stop this rollback.
