As we remember Fernando and that terrible night, we also recall the courage of the activists who stood steadfast and unbroken. Defiant as they mourned their friend. In 2025, civil society is under increased attacks from billionaires and fossil fuel companies trying to silence dissent, but we will show again that hope rises as we join together to meet this moment with increased unity and courage.<\/p>\n\n<p>In 1985, the ship had just returned from evacuating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/from-rongelap-to-mejatto-rainbow-warrior-helped-move-nuclear-refugees\/\">radiation-poisoned island of Rongelap<\/a> and was refuelling and conducting maintenance ahead of a planned protest against French <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/explore\/nuclear\/\">nuclear weapons<\/a> at Mururoa Atoll.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/07\/f7d24057-gp01a36.jpg\" alt=\"Rainbow Warrior Crew. \u00a9 Greenpeace \/ Fernando Pereira\" class=\"wp-image-76949\" title=\"Rainbow Warrior Crew. \u00a9 Greenpeace \/ Fernando Pereira\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 1985 \u2018Rainbow Warrior\u2019 crew. \u00a9 Greenpeace \/ Fernando Pereira<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Earlier that night, the crew and campaigners had been celebrating the birthday of one of the crew <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/steve-sawyer-1956-2019\/\">Steve Sawyer<\/a>. Most were already asleep when two frogmen slipped into the water and planted their explosives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The twin explosions scuttled the ship. Photographer Fernando Pereira, a father and a man who was committed to bearing witness to the injustices of nuclear testing in the Pacific, was murdered, caught in the sudden rush of water and drowned.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/07\/870f6e7a-gp02deb.jpg\" alt=\"Sunken Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand. \u00a9 Gil Hanly \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-76920\" title=\"Sunken Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand. \u00a9 Gil Hanly \/ Greenpeace\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A group including officials looks at the partially sunken Rainbow Warrior during salvage operations after it was bombed. \u00a9 Gil Hanly \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>That night, the French government wasn\u2019t just trying to sink a ship \u2013 it was attempting to sink a movement, to attack activism and to silence the voice of hope.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>It failed.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>In the months that followed, the world was outraged at the state-sponsored terrorism against peaceful protesters. The story of the bombing, as well as the nuclear tests and aftermath, became globally condemned. People around the world heard the story of the crew aboard the ship and their conviction that hope is not a passive or simple state of mind &#8211; hope is a decision to act. Hope is the hammer that breaks the glass in times of emergency.<br><br>Rather than back down in the face of violence, Greenpeace and the movement doubled&nbsp;down and continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/a-history-of-nuclear-testing-in-the-pacific-and-the-successful-campaign-to-stop-it\/\">campaign against nuclear testing until, in 1996, they won<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today, as we mark the 40th anniversary of the attack, the assault on activism, the voyage of the forces which brought the Rainbow Warrior to Auckland Harbour are still painfully relevant.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-international-stateless\/2025\/07\/ce63a167-gp0stp0gx.jpg\" alt=\"People Welcome the Rainbow Warrior I in Rongelap. \u00a9 David Robie \/ Eyes of Fire \/ Greenpeace\" class=\"wp-image-76947\" title=\"People Welcome the Rainbow Warrior I in Rongelap. \u00a9 David Robie \/ Eyes of Fire \/ Greenpeace\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Women of Rongelap island welcome Bunny McDiarmid as crew members from the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior I arrive ashore on the atoll. \u00a9 David Robie \/ Eyes of Fire \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>In the past few months, Greenpeace has been on a tour of the Marshall Islands, documenting the ongoing legacy of nuclear testing. Generations of Marshallese people still live with the ongoing health impacts, the radioactive contamination of their land and waters, and forced dislocation from their homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The shadow of nuclear war, rather than receding, is growing once more&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Around the world short-term greed is placed over people and planet. Autocracy and oligarchy are on the rise. These attacks are intended to reduce our right to protest peacefully.<\/p>\n\n<p>Bombs and bullets are being joined by legal precedents, physical sabotage are now being supplemented by legal measures meant&nbsp; to bankrupt organisations. The end goal is still the same: to stop those who hope for a better world from putting that hope into action.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>This reality of \u201cSLAPPs\u201d \u2013 Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation are legal blunt force trauma and intimidation designed to&nbsp;drain an organisation\u2019s resources, and if not destroying them outright, at least destroying their ability to campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/about\/our-history\/bombing-of-the-rainbow-warrior\/\">bombing of the Rainbow Warrior,<\/a> and the murder of Fernando Pereira, are a sobering reminder that there are forces in the world who will defend their self-interests and damn the consequences, stopping at nothing.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rainbow Warrior bombing: Call to continue fight against nuclear weapons | Stuff.co.nz\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vXXvfBaKkjY?start=8&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>On the anniversary of the bombing we should remember f that not only can things change, but together we can change them for the better.<br><br>The past 40 years have taught us they only win if we give up. We didn\u2019t.
