{"id":73530,"date":"2025-09-03T08:51:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=73530"},"modified":"2025-09-03T08:56:36","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T20:56:36","slug":"the-cost-of-the-climate-crisis-insurance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/the-cost-of-the-climate-crisis-insurance\/","title":{"rendered":"The Cost of the Climate Crisis &#8211; Insurance\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Government Increases Insurance Costs to Pay for Climate Disasters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Did you know that the Act Party Minister, <strong>David Seymour<\/strong>, the one who opposes policies to cut climate pollution, <strong>is increasing the cost of your insurance by at least $200 per year to pay for\u2026. climate disasters<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n<p>Seymour tells us that climate change concern is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1news.co.nz\/2023\/03\/05\/seymour-denies-act-contributed-to-climate-change-denial\/\">overblown<\/a>, opposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/444352\/act-party-s-david-seymour-says-climate-commission-report-should-be-binned\">policies <\/a>to cut climate pollution, and wants New Zealand to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/david-seymour-floats-pulling-out-of-paris-agreement-after-2026-election\/KYMLYYQAUBCFBACWJVEDTMMVPU\/\">pull <\/a>out of the Paris climate agreement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>But at the same time, as the Minister for the Natural Hazards Commission, he is <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/08\/14\/homeowners-face-200-plus-hike-in-natural-hazards-commission-levy\/\">increasing <\/a>the levy we all pay to the Natural Hazards Commission, in order to cover the cost of all the climate-amplified extreme weather events.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-climate-crisis-is-driving-extreme-weather-and-rising-costs\"><strong>The climate crisis is driving extreme weather and rising costs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Because here is the truth that even Seymour can\u2019t escape: <strong>climate change is driving more extreme weather events causing more damage, which is costing more to clean up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not just driving up the costs to the Government\u2019s Natural Hazards Commission, it is driving up insurance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidrvetter\/2024\/12\/10\/costs-pile-up-as-climate-change-adds-600-billion-in-insurance-losses\/\">costs <\/a>across Aotearoa and the world.<\/p>\n\n<p>The cost of living crisis is made worse by climate change driven increases in insurance costs (greedy insurance company profits don\u2019t help either).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Consumer NZ recently <a href=\"https:\/\/d3c7odttnp7a2d.cloudfront.net\/assets\/14283\/CNZ_Insurance_Report_2025_-_Executive_Summary.pdf\">found <\/a>that insurance costs have risen by 900% since 2000, and climate is one of the drivers.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-government-policies-are-making-insurance-costs-worse\"><strong>Government policies are making insurance costs worse<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>The cost of living crisis is being made worse by governments failing to introduce policies to cut climate pollution, and by polluters (aka fossil fuel companies and agribusiness) buying politicians and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/energy-transfer-lawsuit-verdict\/\">threatening <\/a>any campaigners like Greenpeace who oppose them.<\/p>\n\n<p>The 2023 Auckland Anniversary Floods and Cyclone Gabriel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icnz.org.nz\/industry\/media-releases\/2023-climate-disaster-payouts-top-2-billion\/\">cost <\/a>$3.5 billion from over 110,000 claims. And now we are seeing a surge in insurance costs for everyone to pay for the damage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>On top of this, some insurance companies are now moving to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interest.co.nz\/insurance\/134808\/general-insurer-tower-extends-risk-based-pricing-landslides-and-sea-surges-meaning\">withdraw <\/a>insurance coverage for some properties, and to dramatically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interest.co.nz\/insurance\/134808\/general-insurer-tower-extends-risk-based-pricing-landslides-and-sea-surges-meaning\">increase <\/a>premiums for those especially exposed.
