It\u2019s good to see the panel recognise the value and legitimacy of our contribution which draws on over a decade of involvement on this issue,&#8221; said <strong>KASM Chairperson Cindy Baxter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s critical that this panel has all the relevant evidence before it to make this decision &#8211; we all need to do our collective best within an awful process that shouldn\u2019t be happening in the first place. Trans Tasman Resources has already had this bid to destroy our moana rejected by the highest court in the land, but ducked out of the process, clearly thinking the Fast-Track would be an easier bar to clear.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Greenpeace comment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;This would be a brand new destructive activity and this project would be the first in the world of its kind. Given Trans Tasman Resources\u2019 parent company has been promoting a much bigger site of 877 square kilometres to its shareholders, it\u2019s clear this first application sets a critical precedent,&#8221; says <strong>Greenpeace seabed mining campaigner Juressa Lee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019ve been involved in this process for the past 12 years, and we represent literally tens of thousands of people who\u2019ve signed our various petitions calling for a ban on seabed mining. &#8220;<\/p>\n\n<p>The two organisations welcomed the panel\u2019s extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/kasm.us6.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=40fd433e2f2344060946f0bb8&amp;id=2d55ed3159&amp;e=9ab76dcb34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">list of interested partie<\/a>s: it has called on a wide range of voices to make submissions on the application. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
