Greenpeace is calling on prospective investors \u201cnot to bankroll ocean destruction\u201d by investing in wannabe seabed mining company, Manuka Resources, as they list on the NZ stock exchange today.<\/p>\n\n

Australian-owned Manuka Resources, trading under the name MKR, fully owns subsidiary Trans-Tasman Resources (TTR), who are vying to open a giant seabed mine off the coast of Taranaki. <\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace spokesperson Juressa Lee says: \u201cGreenpeace is calling on New Zealand investors and financial institutions to boycott MKR and its destructive seabed mining project in the South Taranaki Bight. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re putting investors on notice – do not bankroll ocean destruction. Investors in this project are taking a huge risk on a project that hasn\u2019t got consent, and may well be overturned in the next political term.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThey will also brand themselves as companies that oppose Indigenous rights, ocean health, and support the desecration of a habitat for blue whales, critically endangered dolphins, and seabirds.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really not a good look for any company to be involved in this project.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n

Taranaki communities \u2013 including all eight iwi, fisherfolk, surfers, divers, boaties – as well as experts have opposed TTR\u2019s plans to mine the Taranaki seabed for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n

The company has failed at every legal safeguard to get this project over the line. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe fact is, TTR has never been able to alleviate concerns for harmful impacts on wildlife and the environment because quite simply this project  will cause incredible damage to these waters and all the people who care for and rely on them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Despite never being able to prove their case through the courts, TTR have applied for approval to mine using the Luxon government\u2019s controversial Fast Track Approvals Bill. <\/p>\n\n

A new report<\/a> to the Fast Track Panel<\/a> describes TTR\u2019s application as containing  “outdated information, internal inconsistencies and unproven technology\u201d.<\/p>\n\n

Lee adds: \u201cAll of this adds up to a very unsafe bet for investors in the project.<\/p>\n\n

 \u201cThis war on nature government might be trying to fast track destructive projects like this, but the reality is the people of Aotearoa will not let this get off the ground. From iwi and hap\u016b who staunchly oppose this project, to the local community and environmentalists – we will resist seabed mining for as long as it takes.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis is a warning to all New Zealand investors considering getting involved in this project. This seabed mining destruction will never be allowed to start.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues. The whakapapa of my wh\u0101nau is a journey through Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. From the Whangape Harbour to Rawhiti via Ngawha, down to Tauranga Moana, over to Tupapa and Ngatangiia in Rarotonga, and north again to Tahiti. My tamariki, through their p\u0101p\u0101, also whakapapa to Toi village in Niue. I was raised by a frugal mother who was always mindful of her impact on the planet, and navigated it accordingly. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
