{"id":74256,"date":"2025-10-10T12:33:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-09T23:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=74256"},"modified":"2025-10-10T12:45:41","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T23:45:41","slug":"seabed-mining-in-the-south-taranaki-bight-trans-tasman-resources-fast-track-bid-is-too-risky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/seabed-mining-in-the-south-taranaki-bight-trans-tasman-resources-fast-track-bid-is-too-risky\/","title":{"rendered":"Seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight: Trans-Tasman Resources\u2019 fast-track bid is too risky\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-latest-where-do-things-stand-right-now\">The latest: where do things stand right now?<\/h3>\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been following the fight to stop seabed mining you\u2019ll know that after being turned down in other forums, Trans Tasman Resources or TTR, has now asked the Government to push its failed seabed mining application through the anti-democratic Fast-Track Approvals process.<br><br>Last month, I observed Alan Eggers (executive chair of TTR) and his team conduct a \u2018walk-through\u2019 of his seabed mining application for the expert panel. What I saw was troubling. There were references to old research and modelling that was part of earlier, failed consent applications. There were contradictions in the presentation, and some concerning comments that downplayed the presence of mining on whales and penguins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>This \u2018project overview conference\u2019 was almost held with no observers. The meeting was called by the expert panel with little notice, and it was held in Auckland, which were huge barriers for all of those who are on the frontline of any impacts. In the end, only two others outside of TTR, the expert panel and EPA staff were able to travel and attend with less than 24 hour\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n\n<p>Then, last week, TTR\u2019s parent company, Manuka Resources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-calls-for-investors-to-boycott-wannabe-seabed-miner-as-they-list-on-nz-stock-exchange\/\">launched on the New Zealand Stock Exchange<\/a>. They\u2019re looking for NZ investors to fund their reckless project. We responded with a clear warning to potential investors, projected onto the NZX building: don\u2019t bankroll ocean destruction; don\u2019t invest in seabed mining.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Is Manuka Resources a risky investment?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uyCh4l0iaB4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p>Back in September, the expert panel named Greenpeace Aotearoa, with our friends <em>Kiwis Against Seabed Mining (KASM)<\/em> as a party that must be heard as they assess TTR\u2019s application. This week, we sent in our joint submission. We\u2019ve brought into the application process expert advice that is necessary to a well-informed decision. More greedy mining companies from the global north are eyeing up the Pacific region for extraction and environmental destruction. Aotearoa doesn\u2019t need more colonisation.<br><br><em>Read more here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/what-is-seabed-mining-and-why-does-it-threaten-the-oceans\/\">What is seabed mining and how does it threaten the ocean?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Trans Tasman Resources and others want to exploit our moana for short term profits for the wealthy few, while socialising the harmful consequences to the rest of us and our future generations.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-is-greenpeace-involved-nbsp\"><br>How is Greenpeace involved?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n<p>Together we\u2019ve already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/supreme-court-slams-door-on-seabed-mining-time-for-a-ban\/\">stopped this project<\/a> several times. And, despite the Luxon government raising this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/oct\/01\/new-zealand-supreme-court-blocks-seabed-mining-consent\">zombie project<\/a> from the dead, we have to keep opposing it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019re also standing with independent experts who were silenced when TTR quit their reconsideration hearing before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and were silenced again with the undemocratic fast-track politics. People deserve the full picture and the best available information.<\/p>\n\n<p>We\u2019re carrying the <a href=\"https:\/\/action.greenpeace.org.nz\/petition\/ban-seabed-mining\">voices of more than 50,000 people<\/a> who have already said they want to ban seabed mining in Aotearoa New Zealand. TTR\u2019s plume model for example underestimates how far fine sediment could spread &#8211; both near the surface and on the seabed. That means the true risks to wildlife and coastal communities are being downplayed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Worse, we\u2019re seeing TTR re-submitting failed \u2018evidence\u2019 despite criticism from the Environment Protection Authority reconsideration hearing last year, and comments from the <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/09\/24\/fast-track-expert-finds-substantial-uncertainty-at-heart-of-seabed-mine\/\">EPA convenor within the current Fast Track application<\/a>. TTR\u2019s science doesn\u2019t stand up.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-it-s-good-for-the-economy-right-wrong\">But it\u2019s good for the economy right? Wrong.<\/h3>\n\n<p>Trans-Tasman Resources\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/seabed-miner-trans-tasman-resources-retracts-claim-it-will-earn-1-billion-a-year\/R5LDZYLHOBDQDA3XL3DFKZ3FRE\/\">economics don\u2019t stack up<\/a>. TTR has not weighed in the environmental and cultural costs and exaggerated job claims. We\u2019ve already seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/531844\/wind-power-firm-departs-amid-fast-track-controversy-over-seabed-mining\">one company pull out of offshore wind investment<\/a>. We are also yet to see any evidence of net public benefit for Aotearoa or Taranaki.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What wildlife is at risk from seabed mining?<\/h3>\n\n<p>The South Taranaki Bight is a vital feeding ground of krill for whales. Add in constant noise and muddy plumes from mining, and the balance tips against species already struggling to survive. My dad has always enjoyed nature and instilled in us that there were responsibilities we had to be able to keep enjoying it. This was my very first influence. When I became an adult and then a mother myself, decolonising my life became a priority to raise my tamariki with an unapologetic, Indigenous worldview. Along the way and without realising, my whakaaro around kaitiakitanga began to shift, or rather, return. I felt more responsible, but also more empowered. I connect the dots between 160+ years of colonisation, extractivism, social and environmental harms and injustices and a worldview that sees the environment as separate to people. That people are somehow entitled to take, own, throw away, destroy and degrade. We are witnessing the impacts from living in a system rooted in colonialism and racism and extractive industries are devastating the planet and furthering the climate crisis. Now, wannabe miners are eyeing up the seabed in the South Taranaki Bight, and also seeking to plunder the deep seas. This problem is colossal, but so is our fight to protect te taiao. There are solutions to these issues.
