In the lead-up to COP30, Greenpeace warns that big emitters are backsliding on their climate commitments by looking to adopt the concept of ‘no additional warming’. <\/p>\n\n

Methane is the fastest way to slow global heating. It traps 80 times more heat than CO\u2082 over 20 years and is responsible for nearly a third of current warming.<\/p>\n\n

But high-income, high-emitting nations such as New Zealand and Ireland are weakening their methane reduction targets under the misleading concept of \u201cno additional warming\u201d or \u201ctemperature neutrality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

This rollback violates international climate law. It undermines the Paris Agreement\u2019s 1.5\u00b0C goal, breaches the principle of \u201ccommon but differentiated responsibility,\u201d and contradicts the Global Methane Pledge.<\/p>\n\n

The science is unequivocal. Methane levels are now 265% higher than pre-industrial times, and both the IPCC and UNEP confirm that deep cuts by 2030\u20132040 are essential to avoid temperature overshoot.<\/p>\n\n

Greenpeace is calling on all nations to reject the premise of ‘no additional warming’ and support strong action to cut methane emissions now.<\/p>\n\n
