The rest of us are paying $3 a litre at the pump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Six ways the Luxon Government made this global oil crisis hit harder at home.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n<p>Petrol is currently pushing <strong>$3 a litre in New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has a Tesla. Or his wife does. So he\u2019s sorted.<\/p>\n\n<p>What about the rest of the country?<\/p>\n\n<p>Here are six decisions Luxon\u2019s Government made that have caused this global oil shock to hurt Kiwis more than it needed to. Plus one final doozy &#8211; coming soon &#8211; to lock us into <em>yet another <\/em>volatile global fossil fuel market.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-they-crashed-the-electric-car-market\">1. They <em>crashed <\/em> the electric car market<\/h2>\n\n<p>Within months of taking office, the Luxon Government scrapped the Clean Car Discount, which gave people rebates for buying EVs or low-emissions cars. Luxon\u2019s family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/politics\/350474344\/national-leader-christopher-luxon-appears-to-have-claimed-clean-car-discount-on-new-tesla\">already received thousands under the scheme for their new Tesla<\/a>. Soon after, the scheme was gone.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2024\/02\/07\/ev-sales-plummet-after-clean-car-discount-scrapped\/\">collapse in the EV market<\/a> was instant:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2023, about 1 in 4 new cars sold in New Zealand were electric.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In early 2024, that plummeted to around 1 in 26.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Instead of helping households escape high petrol prices and reduce national reliance on imported oil, the Luxon Government pulled the plug on EV incentives.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. They\u2019re turning New Zealand into a dumping ground for petrol-hungry, dirty cars&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Luxon Government cut fees for importing gas guzzling cars <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/11\/18\/govt-moves-urgently-to-make-it-cheaper-to-import-dirty-cars\/\">by nearly 80%<\/a>. Those fees were designed to discourage the dirtiest, most petrol-hungry vehicles. Officials warned the change would cost Kiwi drivers <strong>an extra $115 million at the pump<\/strong> because the vehicle fleet would burn more fuel. Luxon&#8217;s Government did it anyway.<\/p>\n\n<p>Now the Government is considering scrapping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/579158\/nz-will-be-dumping-ground-for-high-emission-cars-ev-advocate-warns\">the clean car standard entirely<\/a>, removing all financial disincentives for high-emission imports. The result: New Zealand risks becoming a <strong>dumping ground for the world\u2019s most petrol-hungry and dirtiest cars<\/strong> &#8211; vehicles other countries are trying to get rid of.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. They scrapped Auckland light rail <em>and <\/em>Wellington\u2019s low-emissions transport plan<\/h2>\n\n<p>The government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/506674\/national-led-government-officially-cancels-auckland-light-rail-plans\">cancelled Auckland Light Rail<\/a> which would have given the country\u2019s biggest city a real alternative to sitting in traffic and taken around 14,500 cars off the road. Now Auckland remains one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/business\/566892\/auckland-more-dependent-on-cars-less-density-than-its-peers-report-finds\">the most car-dependent citie<\/a>s in the developed world. Wellington also had a plan to invest in better public transport, safer cycling and walking, and less congestion. The government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/wellington-mayor-tory-whanau-blasts-nationals-flaccid-vision-of-scrapping-transport-plan\/S75WX4KH5FEOLPCCX3YTEULHGQ\/\"><strong>killed it off<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>Another chance to reduce oil dependence &#8211; gone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. They slashed funding for public transport, walking and cycling and poured <em>billions <\/em>into roads instead<\/h2>\n\n<p>The government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/514258\/young-commuters-feeling-the-pinch-as-government-ends-public-transport-subsidy\">ended half price<\/a> <strong>public transport fares for young people<\/strong>. Then, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/governments-transport-shake-up-new-roads-in-cycleways-out\/ODVUVNJMW5CDBLQ4DFO75PLB2A\/\">slashed funding<\/a> for public transport, walking and cycleways while pouring billions into 17 roads of \u201cnational significance\u201d. The total cost of those roads has now blown <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/10\/23\/5-1b-cost-blowout-for-eight-roads-of-national-significance\/\">out to between $44 &#8211; $54 billion<\/a>. More roads, less public transport and cycleway infrastructure means more people forced into cars and <strong>more exposure to global petrol prices spikes.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. They Scrapped the GIDI Decarbonisation Fund<\/h2>\n\n<p>The Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) fund helped businesses to switch to more efficient energy sources and was one of the ways to reduce New Zealand\u2019s reliance on volatile imported fossil fuels. The Luxon Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/national\/has-cutting-corporate-welfare-created-coal-headache\">cancelled it and replaced it with\u2026 nothing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Now they want to build a new fossil gas LNG import terminal<\/h2>\n\n<p>We don\u2019t need any new fossil fuels to maintain our energy security out to 2050. That was the clear finding from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/assets\/electricity-demand-and-generation-scenarios-report-2024.pdf\">2024 MBIE report<\/a> which also confirmed wind and solar are the cheapest sources of new electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Despite that, the Luxon Government has cooked up a ludicrous plan to build a multi-billion-dollar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/taxing-power-bills-to-fund-fossil-fuels-no-thanks\/\">LNG import terminal<\/a>, which they want to make New Zealanders pay for via a new gas tax on our power bills. This dirty LNG terminal would lock us into more fossil fuel dependence and expose New Zealand to another volatile global gas market &#8211; one that we are currently shielded from.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bottom Line&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n<p>Oil and gas price spikes happen. They always have and they always will.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The bottom line is &#8211; we need to <strong>end fossil fuels<\/strong>. For the climate and for the cost of living.<\/p>\n\n<p>Policies that slow the transition away from fossil fuels both worsen the climate crisis and lock households into paying whatever the global oil and gas market demands.<\/p>\n\n<p>Right now that price is $3 a litre.
