{"id":76065,"date":"2026-03-12T10:15:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T21:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=76065"},"modified":"2026-03-12T10:15:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T21:15:22","slug":"luxons-climate-policies-leave-kiwis-hurting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/luxons-climate-policies-leave-kiwis-hurting\/","title":{"rendered":"Luxon\u2019s climate policies leave Kiwis hurting as petrol hits $3 a litre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As petrol prices climb to around $3 a litre, Greenpeace is pointing to a series of Government decisions that have left Kiwis hit harder by the oil price spike.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Luxon Government has spent the last two years dismantling policies that were helping wean New Zealanders off expensive imported oil,\u201d says Gen Toop, Senior Campaigner at Greenpeace Aotearoa.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cInstead of helping households escape volatile and expensive petrol prices, they have crashed the EV market, slashed public transport funding and are spending billions on new roads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThese decisions are making the climate crisis, and the cost of living crisis worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace points to a number of decisions that it says have increased New Zealand&#8217;s dependence on imported fossil fuels including:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scrapping the Clean Car Discount, which provided rebates for electric and low-emissions vehicles. The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2024\/02\/07\/ev-sales-plummet-after-clean-car-discount-scrapped\/\">collapse in the EV market<\/a> was instant: In 2023 around one in four new cars sold was electric, by early 2024 that had plummeted to one in 26.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cut fees on high-polluting vehicle imports <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/11\/18\/govt-moves-urgently-to-make-it-cheaper-to-import-dirty-cars\/\">by nearly 80%<\/a> despite officials warning it would cost Kiwi drivers <strong>an extra $115 million at the pump<\/strong>. Now Ministers are considering going further and scrapping<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/588668\/government-considering-scrapping-entire-clean-car-standard\"> the clean car standard entirely,<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>C<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/506674\/national-led-government-officially-cancels-auckland-light-rail-plans\">ancelling Auckland Light Rail<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/wellington-mayor-tory-whanau-blasts-nationals-flaccid-vision-of-scrapping-transport-plan\/S75WX4KH5FEOLPCCX3YTEULHGQ\/\"><strong>scrapping<\/strong> Wellington\u2019s low-emissions transport <\/a>plan, both of which aimed to reduce car dependence in the country&#8217;s major cities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/514258\/young-commuters-feeling-the-pinch-as-government-ends-public-transport-subsidy\">\u00a0half price<\/a>\u00a0 public transport fares for young people\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/politics\/governments-transport-shake-up-new-roads-in-cycleways-out\/ODVUVNJMW5CDBLQ4DFO75PLB2A\/\">lashing funding<\/a> for public transport, walking and cycleways while pouring billions into 17 roads of \u201cnational significance\u201d &#8211; the total cost of those roads has now blown <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.co.nz\/2025\/10\/23\/5-1b-cost-blowout-for-eight-roads-of-national-significance\/\">out to between $44 &#8211; $54 billion<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/national\/has-cutting-corporate-welfare-created-coal-headache\">Cancelling the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI)<\/a> fund, which helped businesses move away from fossil fuels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans to build a new LNG import terminal so that New Zealand can begin importing and burning fossil gas for electricity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>\u201cThis Government is effectively turning New Zealand into a dumping ground for the world\u2019s dirtiest, most oil-hungry cars while other countries rapidly switch to EVs,\u201d Toop says.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cAt the same time they are slashing public and active transport options which forces more people into cars leaving them facing more pain at the pump when petrol prices spike.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis latest plan to build a multi-billion dollar LNG import terminal is ludicrous. Importing and burning another volatile fossil fuel is the last thing our climate, and power bills need. Especially when we have all the wind, sun and renewable energy potential we need right here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t<section\n\t\t\tclass=\"boxout post-65568 Four activists with Greenpeace Denmark have swum from the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior across the Dan oil field in the Danish North Sea and are peacefully occupying the Dan Bravo oil rig to demand an immediate ban on all further oil and gas exploration in Denmark, followed by a complete phase out of domestic fossil fuel production and a massive expansion of clean offshore wind power. Unless the Danish government is brave enough to ban the search for new oil and gas in Denmark, it will never be the green frontrunner it claims to be. The Dan Bravo is the site where Denmark first began extracting oil in 1972.
