It was a window into how he thinks leadership works. Tova\u2019s immediate pushback, &#8220;Your job is the Prime Minister&#8221;, cut right to the heart of the problem we\u2019re seeing in New Zealand&#8217;s environmental and social politics today.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the surface, CEO sounds efficient. It\u2019s about spreadsheets, delegations, and &#8220;hitting the phones&#8221;.  But there is a fundamental difference between running a company and leading a country<\/p>\n\n<p>A CEO\u2019s primary duty is profit. In the corporate world, if a project (like a new mine or a motorway) makes money, it\u2019s a win. People who disagree aren\u2019t New Zealanders with a stake in the future of the country, they are obstacles or stakeholders to be managed.<br><br>In a country, success isn&#8217;t measured in a quarterly profits report. The balance sheet needs to take into account the health of our rivers, the stability of our climate, and the wellbeing of our communities.<br><br>The CEO approach to politics is how we end up with fast-track consenting laws that bypass environmental protections in the name of efficiency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/luxons-war-on-nature-timeline\/\">The Luxon Government has created the conditions for polluters to run riot <\/a>and has bent over backwards to entrench New Zealand in fossil fuel instead of transitioning to renewables.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>And what has that left us with?<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>C<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/gore-nitrate-concerns-greenpeace-free-drinking-water-nitrate-testing-southland-canterbury\/\">ontaminated drinking water coming out of the tap<\/a> in Canterbury and Southland, leaving people at risk of health issues from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/freshwater\/nitrate-contamination-in-drinking-water-what-you-need-to-know-and-some-frequently-asked-questions\/\">high nitrate levels.<\/a> Last year, Environment Canterbury declared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/nitrate-emergency-canterbury-what-does-it-mean\/\">a Nitrate Emergency<\/a>, acknowledging the real threat that nitrate pollution poses to the drinking water in Canterbury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>U<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/explore\/water-pollution\/#h-why-is-the-water-in-new-zealand-so-polluted\">nswimmable rivers all over the country<\/a>. Rivers and waterways are becoming so polluted they cannot safely sustain plant &amp; animal life meaning that people can\u2019t safely swim or fish.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>H<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/luxons-climate-policies-leave-kiwis-hurting\/\">uge numbers of New Zealanders unable to afford basic transport to work and schoo<\/a>l as the price of oil rises. This comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/luxon-has-a-tesla-the-rest-of-us-are-paying-3-a-litre-at-the-pump\/\">the Luxon Government\u2019s continuous embrace of fossil fuels over green options<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whole regions being severely impacted by climate disasters regularly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t seem like success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nature-is-not-a-commodity\">Nature is not a commodity<\/h2>\n\n<p>When we treat the environment like a business commodity, we make trade offs that we can\u2019t afford. A CEO looks at nature and sees resources to exploit. A Prime Minister should look at it and see a life-support system for us, and for future generations.<br><br>Tova was right. We didn&#8217;t hire a manager to oversee New Zealand Inc. Prime Ministers are&nbsp; elected to protect New Zealand\u2019s future.
