{"id":7875,"date":"2020-02-25T14:21:37","date_gmt":"2020-02-25T01:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/new-zealand\/?p=7875"},"modified":"2024-07-12T12:44:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-12T00:44:55","slug":"greenpeace-calls-on-pm-to-launch-review-after-nzf-fishery-donations-exposed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/greenpeace-calls-on-pm-to-launch-review-after-nzf-fishery-donations-exposed\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace calls on PM to launch review after NZ First fishery donations exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> Greenpeace is <a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/56588\/petition\/1\">calling on the Prime Minister<\/a> to launch an external review into Talley\u2019s-related fishing decisions made by this Government, in light of new revelations that tens of thousands of dollars have been donated to the New Zealand First Foundation by Talley\u2019s without being declared publicly.<\/p>\n\n<p>The environmental organisation would also like to see New Zealand First MPs excluded from future decisions about fishing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace Executive Director, Dr Russel Norman, says it\u2019s important to ensure that decisions made by the Government regarding one of New Zealand\u2019s major fishing companies have not been unduly influenced by the donations.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cSince this Government took office in 2017, there have been a series of critical decisions made by the Government to the benefit of Talley\u2019s and to the detriment of the marine environment and recreational fishers,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNew Zealand First has clearly been influencing decisions made about fishing policy, and at the same time Talley\u2019s has been donating to the New Zealand First Foundation, which has not declared these donations. Minister Shane Jones has publicly said he\u2019s happy to be known as the \u2018ghost fishing Minister\u2019.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis raises serious questions about undeclared conflicts of interest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The Electoral Commission has already formed a <a href=\"https:\/\/elections.nz\/media-and-news\/2020\/statement-on-donations-enquiries\/\">view<\/a> that donations made to the New Zealand First Foundation by other sectors, including racing and forestry, were not disclosed as required under the Electoral Act 1993. The Commission has referred the matter to the Police, who have referred it to the Serious Fraud Office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Norman wrote to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern last year requesting she ensure New Zealand First, and Minister Shane Jones, be kept out of fisheries related decisions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/02\/0f5f55ca-jacinda-ardern-reply-to-maui-letter.pdf\">Ardern responded<\/a> that the usual Cabinet conflict of interest rules would apply.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe Prime Minister, like the rest of us, presumably didn\u2019t then know about these newly revealed donations. This means she would not have been able to assess potential conflicts of interest that New Zealand First has been bringing to the Cabinet table,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis is relevant to decisions such as halting the rollout of cameras on fishing boats, which is also consistent with Talley\u2019s opposition to cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The commitment to put cameras on boats was made by the previous Government and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi.govt.nz\/news-and-resources\/media-releases\/mpi-accepts-findings-of-independent-review-into-fisheries-compliance-operations\/\">CEO of MPI<\/a> in response to MPI\u2019s failure to prosecute illegal fish dumping and underreporting of catch. At the time, Talley\u2019s were found to be underreporting the weight of their cartons of fish, which Fisheries Officers considered unlawful.<\/p>\n\n<p>Other critical Talley\u2019s related decisions made by the Government include lobbying by a governmental delegation at a South Pacific fisheries meeting last week to get a Talley\u2019s-owned fishing vessel off the draft international blacklist, after it was caught bottom trawling 14 times in a restricted area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>New Zealand First Minister Shane Jones publicly undermined MPI\u2019s prosecution of the vessel by labeling it \u201ca mere technical issue\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>At the South Pacific Fisheries meeting, Norman says the New Zealand delegation was also an outlier, arguing against more protection for vulnerable marine ecosystems from bottom trawlers. Talley\u2019s is one of two New Zealand fishing companies bottom trawling the South Pacific.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIn light of the donations of tens of thousands of dollars from Talley\u2019s that the New Zealand First Foundation has kept secret, the Prime Minister needs to protect the integrity of the Government by initiating an external review of all Talley\u2019s-related fishing decisions, and by keeping New Zealand First MP\u2019s out of any future decisions about fishing,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<section\n\t\t\tclass=\"boxout  \"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n\t\t\t<a\n\t\t\t\tdata-ga-category=\"Take
