{"id":78815,"date":"2026-09-16T11:25:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/?p=78815"},"modified":"2026-09-16T11:27:40","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T23:27:40","slug":"new-election-scorecard-shows-parties-with-worst-environmental-policies-are-also-taking-donations-from-polluting-industries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/new-election-scorecard-shows-parties-with-worst-environmental-policies-are-also-taking-donations-from-polluting-industries\/","title":{"rendered":"New election scorecard shows parties with worst environmental policies are also taking donations from polluting industries\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">National, ACT and NZ First have taken over $1 million in political donations from agribusiness-linked donors since 2022, new Greenpeace analysis reveals.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The finding is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/act\/election-environmental-policy-scorecard-2026\/#h-nature-amp-climate-policy-scorecards\"><strong>Greenpeace\u2019s 2026 election scorecard<\/strong><\/a>, which exposes a stark divide between the parties over the future of New Zealand\u2019s rivers, oceans, climate and conservation land.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenpeace says the figures should \u201cset alarm bells ringing\u201d, following revelations about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/politics\/596197\/a-co-ordinated-campaign-of-secret-lobbying-climate-activist\">Fonterra\u2019s secret lobbying<\/a> of the Government over the Smith climate case, and recent reports that major agriculture lobby groups <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepost.co.nz\/politics\/361079040\/how-big-farm-lobbyists-helped-rewrite-new-rma-laws\">privately lobbied Ministers<\/a> for changes to new environmental laws &#8211; many of which were subsequently adopted.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenpeace campaigner Gen Toop says: \u201cOur scorecard shows voters have fundamentally different choices for nature this election. It also puts political donations from major industries alongside the parties\u2019 policy positions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe included donations data because people deserve to know which companies and wealthy individuals are funding the political parties vying for power this November,\u201d says Toop.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you follow the money, a disturbing pattern emerges. The parties taking money from agribusiness, fishing, mining and fossil fuel interests are the parties promising policies that benefit those industries at the expense of our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis shows since 2022, National, ACT and NZ First have collectively received <strong>$1,143,659 <\/strong>from agribusiness interests,<strong> $345,980 <\/strong>from mining interests and <strong>$314,261 <\/strong>from oil and gas companies. National and NZ First collectively received <strong>$172,812 <\/strong>from commercial fishing interests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ACT alone received <strong>$771,761 <\/strong>from agribusiness-linked donors.
