We just gunged fertiliser company Ravensdown.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7948\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-aotearoa-stateless\/2020\/03\/dea83b0a-slime-510x340.jpg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Ravensdown Christchurch HQ slimed by Greenpeace activists<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s shocking, but right now, 70% of monitored rivers are too polluted to swim in.<\/strong> Companies like Ravensdown are driving industrial dairying and making our rivers sick, all so they can make a quick buck.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis summer kiwi families have been encountering slime-choked rivers at their favourite swimming spots,\u201d says Greenpeace campaigner, Gen Toop. \u201cToday we decided to give Ravensdown a taste of their own medicine.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Use of synthetic fertiliser has increased 627% since 1990 and in that time the dairy herd has more than doubled. The effects on our rivers are devastating. <strong>Nitrates from synthetic fertiliser and cow urine, create slimy algal blooms, suck the life out of waterways and threaten the safety of our drinking water.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Matt Coffey grew up near Selwyn Huts, on the banks of the Selwyn\/Waikirikiri River. Several swimming spots along the Selwyn have warnings against swimming.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up on and around the Selwyn River. In boats, fishing, catching cockabillies. But that\u2019s all gone nowadays. <strong>My nephews can\u2019t do that any more. <\/strong>My sister was living at Selwyn Huts but had to move out because she couldn\u2019t keep the kids out of the river,\u201d says Matt.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>In 2017, Jacinda Ardern promised to clean up our rivers.<\/strong> Last month, we held her to her promise by placing billboards in the polluted Selwyn\/Waikirikiri river calling on the Prime Minister to honour her pledge to clean up our rivers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image  caption-style-blue-overlay caption-alignment-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55056\/action\/1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/3ItcV1RGSM3D0FYil1Gj6ejmXk9O8ufFXJZEzZdkqLnM6Os9pLnLgywQSxeGQrIp4mYJql9dzl_9XtA9VANO05jg4J3A8Ax3LkZO6wCUm1UUTNCIrux_9qmjE8e_Ha4i4WrsPx2i\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>We know that companies like Ravensdown don\u2019t have Kiwis\u2019 best interests at heart. They want to keep selling as much fertiliser as they can and watch the dollars roll in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>But no corporation has the right to ruin our rivers for a profit.<\/strong> We can make sure our freshwater is protected for generations to come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Right now, the Government is deciding on new freshwater rules. <strong>If we get it right, these rules could cap the amount of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser that\u2019s put on the land, stemming the flow into our rivers and thwarting companies like Ravensdown.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Our government works for us, and they need to know that we want to see a cap on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, for the health of our freshwater and our communities. There\u2019s a better way &#8211; regenerative agriculture that works with the environment, not against it.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55056\/action\/1\">Email the Prime Minister now and call on her to bring in strong new freshwater rules that place a cap on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, and support farmers to transition to regenerative agriculture that doesn\u2019t rely on chemicals.&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-cta\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link\" href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/55056\/action\/1\">TAKE ACTION<\/a><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s reclaim our rivers from the slime.
