These biodiversity hotspots are home to precious coral that can be wiped out in moments by this fishing method.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrowing money at a new trawler shows this industry has no intention of stopping, or is even thinking about a transition away from destructive bottom trawling. It\u2019s yet another reason why we need the government to close vital habitats without delay to protect the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Talley\u2019s vessel will soon leave Spain for New Zealand and is expected to arrive in early 2027.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hooper says: \u201cIf this industry continues to build new supertrawlers to rip up the ocean in Aotearoa and the South Pacific, they can expect resistance. Building a new trawler is in clear violation of what New Zealanders have said they want.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecuring a healthy ocean for the future has never been more urgent, and real ocean protection means banning trawling from these important ecosystems without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activists also rebranded Talley\u2019s satellite office in Spain.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bottom trawling is an indiscriminate fishing method where large, heavy nets are dragged along the seafloor, destroying ocean habitats, including coral and netting a high amount of non-target species as bycatch.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/story\/78-of-nzers-want-bottom-trawling-banned-as-govt-pushes-to-catch-more-coral-in-south-pacific\/\">Polling shows<\/a> New Zealanders overwhelmingly support banning bottom trawling from seamounts, and stronger protections for the High Seas of the South Pacific. But the New Zealand government has yet to act. The country has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/aotearoa\/press-release\/nz-govt-accused-of-acting-as-industry-mouthpiece-after-bid-to-open-deep-sea-coral-hotspot-to-trawling-in-tasman-sea\/\">objected to protections<\/a> at international fisheries meetings, consistently siding with the fishing industry over ocean protection.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, despite clear scientific proof of a vulnerable ecosystem home to hundreds of corals and sponges on the Lord Howe Rise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sprfmo.int\/assets\/Meetings\/02-SC\/14th-SC-2026\/Deepwater-DWG\/SC14-DW16-Update-of-New-Zealand-2024-VME-Encounter-Review.pdf\">the government proposed<\/a> opening the area to New Zealand bottom trawlers.\u00a0 The area has remained closed, following a consensus recommendation from other states active in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talley\u2019s has a long history of carrying out bottom trawling destruction.&nbsp; In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpi.govt.nz\/news\/media-releases\/ishing-company-and-master-guilty-on-14-charges-of-breaching-international-fishing-rules\/\">2018, the <em>Amaltal Apollo<\/em> trawled<\/a> in a protected area on the Lord Howe Rise, in the international waters of the Tasman Sea. The <em>Amaltal Mariner<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/business\/industries\/124486596\/amaltal-fined-27600-for-bottom-trawling-in-kaikura-marine-reserve\">was convicted of trawling<\/a> in a marine reserve off Kaik\u014dura in 2019.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Greenpeace activists took action against two Talley\u2019s trawlers in 2025, also rebranding them with the words ocean killer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hooper said: \u201cWe are in an ocean crisis, and the industries that damage the ocean are doubling down, building bigger trawlers in their relentless push to suck more out of the seas. It cannot be sustained. We must protect vulnerable ecosystems from bottom trawling if we\u2019re to have a healthy ocean and fish for the future.
