A team of independent scientists joined the crew of the Arctic Sunrise to conduct a series of scientific research programs that will further the understanding of the impacts of both oil and chemical dispersants on the Gulf ecosystem in the aftermath of the British Petroleum oil spill. A BP leased drilling platform exploded April 20 killing 11 workers and causing a leak of millions of barrels of oil from a well-head one mile deep 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Finally capped in August, the leak was treated with more than a million gallons of Corexit, a toxic dispersant.
