Climate Refugee 'Animals' in Johannesburg

Polar bears and Big Five animals have been spotted holding signs in various locations around Johannesburg during the last two weeks.

As many people in African are already living with the effects of climate change, Greenpeace Africa wanted to use the animals to emphasise the urgent need for climate action.

The climate refugee animals held signs with messages like “Water hole dried-up, need new home” and "My house in the Arctic melted”.

Climate refugees are defined by the Global Governance Project as people who have to leave their habitats because of sudden or gradual alterations in their natural environment related to at least one of three impacts of climate change: sea-level rise, extreme weather events, and drought and water scarcity. The term was first used as far back as the 1980s.

This is a selection of images taken while the animals were out and about.
