Greenpeace is calling for an immediate stop to the provision of new FSC certifications in the Congo basin.
The FSC label (Forest Stewardship Council) is a very important tool for distinguishing between sustainably supplied wood, and that which isn't. An FSC certification provides information on where the wood came from, and it guarantees that the source was sustainably managed, both ecologically and socially.
For years now Greenpeace has been involved in ensuring that the standards of the FSC certification were maintained -- making sure that they aren't being diluted and made less stringent.
However, rapid expansion of the FSC certification scheme in forest regions with poor governance and high levels of corruption is leading to a situation where a number of logging companies that fail to comply with FSC standards are being awarded the certification. This is undermining the FSC’s global integrity and credibility, and is a cause for serious concern amongst its members and stakeholders.
