THE ESPERANZA TOUR

West African waters are home to a rich, beautiful and plentiful marine life. They could be a resource for generations to come - if managed sustainably.

However, these waters are facing a massive pressure from too large and too many fishing vessels. That means local fish become rarer, and more expensive.

Our 2015 report highlights the urgent need for stricter control by all West African coastal states. Greenpeace’s Esperanza is now in the West African waters to empower communities and small-scale fishermen to ask their governments to address the situation.

The lack of solid and regional fisheries management in West Africa makes it difficult for the EU to enforce its sustainability goals. At the same time, China’s distant water fleet operating in West Africa is repeating the same catastrophic mistakes that has made their own waters empty.

It’s time communities around West Africa unite; it’s time the foreign nations fishing in the region live up to their responsibilities; it’s time together we support the setup of an effective, transparent, sustainable regional fisheries management system in West Africa.
