The Issue:

The Inuit of Clyde River are defending their tiny community from seismic blasting, which harms whales, puts their traditional way of life at risk and paves the way for destructive oil drilling in Arctic waters.  A project has been approved in Canada without Inuit consent. As a result, Clyde River has been forced to take their case to the Supreme Court of Canada because the Canadian government has ignored their rights as Indigenous Peoples.  On November 30th, they will stand before the Supreme Court of Canada in a historic court case, the results of which could be a watershed moment for Indigenous rights and environmental justice in Canada and around the world.  Greenpeace Canada is asking volunteers around the world to show their support for Clyde River Inuit as they face the Supreme Court of Canada in an effort to protect their Arctic home from dangerous seismic blasting.

The Target: Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau

Internationally, Prime Minister Trudeau has succeeded in building a reputation of being progressive and taking a lead both on Indigenous rights and environmental protection. Sadly, his actions say otherwise. With this global ask, we want to highlight the incongruence between Trudeau’s words and deeds in order to push him towards greater accountability on his promises to uphold Indigenous rights (implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People).

Stop Seismic Blasting: Send Your Noise Complaints to Trudeau

To defend these courageous defenders in Clyde River we need supporters around the world to take action and use their international pressure to tell  Trudeau that he must act on his words. We are calling for volunteers to send in noise complaints to let him know seismic blasting must be stopped, Indigenous rights must be respected, and our Arctic deserves protection.
