"Die Greenpeace-Aktion an der Ölbohrinsel Prirazlomnaya in der Barentssee war eine friedliche und gewaltfreie Protestaktion“, erklärt Knut Fleckenstein, SPD-Europaabgeordneter und Vorsitzender der EU-Russland-Delegation im Europäischen Parlament: „Sie zielte nicht darauf ab, die Bohrinsel in die Gewalt von Greenpeace zu bringen, sondern darauf, Aufmerksamkeit zu erlangen. Ein demokratischer Staat sollte friedlichen Protest akzeptieren und nicht als Piraterie diffamieren. Ich hoffe zudem, dass es so schnell wie möglich zu einem Freispruch vom Vorwurf der Piraterie kommt und auch nicht ersatzweise andere Vorwürfe fabriziert werden."
Bei seiner Reise nach Moskau vom 28. bis 30. Oktober und den dort geplanten gemeinsamen Sitzungen von Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments und den beiden Kammern des russischen Parlaments (Staatsduma und Föderationsrat) wird sich Knut Fleckenstein ebenso für die Freilassung der 30 Besatzungsmitglieder aus 19 verschiedenen Ländern einsetzen.

"The Greenpeace action on the Prirazlomnaya oil rig in the Barents Sea was a peaceful and non-violent protest," said Knut Fleckenstein MEP (S&D), Chairman of the Russia-EU delegation in the European Parliament. "Its purpose was not for Greenpeace to gain control of the oil rig, but to raise awareness. A democratic state should accept peaceful protest and not label it as piracy. I also hope that there will be an acquittal on the piracy charges as quickly as possible and that no further charges are fabricated in their place."
Knut Fleckenstein will also plead for the release of the 30 crew members from 19 different countries in joint meetings between Members of the European Parliament and of the two chambers of the Russian Parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council), during his visit to Moscow on 28 to 30 October.
