Brussels – EU trade ministers meeting in Brussels today agreed to allow national parliaments to vote on an EU-Canada trade agreement (CETA). However, the European Commission wants the agreement to come into force before national parliament ratification. Greenpeace warns this would be “democratic farce”.
A formal proposal by the Commission on CETA ratification is expected in mid-June.
Greenpeace trade campaigner Susan Cohen Jehoram said: “The provisional application of CETA before national parliaments are allowed to vote would be a democratic farce. The deal would be allowed in through the backdoor. CETA and its big brother TTIP remain threats for our democratic rights, our health and environmental protection. People on both sides of the Atlantic are understandably concerned. CETA’s entry into force without full democratic scrutiny would be unacceptable.”
