As in the case of most fishermen across West Africa, Ameth’s family has been fishing for generations. Fishing is his sole source of income. Ameth went to high school but stopped studying to support his family by working as a fisherman. He uses seines, nets and hooks to fish. He is the general secretary and spokesperson of the professional fisheries organisation on Joal, Senegal. The fishermen were in Brussels as part of a campaign giving West African fishermen a voice to speak out against the environmental and human impact of overfishing by EU fleets in developing countries. They also meet politicians from several European countries who will contribute to the ongoing reform of the EU’s fishing rules; the EU Common Fisheries Policy, over the next three years.
