Rescuing the North and Baltic Seas: Marine Reserves – a key tool

Publication - July 1, 2004
This report describes the multiple threats now jeopardising the marine life and ecology of the North Sea and Baltic Sea. It proposes an approach to countering these threats involving the establishment of networks of large-scale marine reserves in which fishing and other extractive activities are prohibited.

Author: Greenpeace

Executive summary: Fisheries represent perhaps the greatest single threat to North Sea and Baltic ecosystems. Overfishing has left stocks of many key commercial species close to collapse while governments have put short-term political and economic interests ahead of effective management.
