The Elephant population in Chhattisgarh has grown since the pachyderms started visiting the state's forests in late '80s due to rampant deforestation in Odisha and Jharkhand. This has resulted in an increase in human-elephant conflict - human deaths have increased to an average of 25 a year and around 14 elephants have died due to electrocution in Chhattisgarh between 2005 and 2013.
