One year down the line, the air quality hasn’t improved much, despite efforts like ban on firecrackers, implementation of odd-even car policy and more. GB Shaw once said, “There is no sincerer love than the love of food,” and indeed he was true. Our actions and intentions are governed by this basic instinct of hunger and while we strive to achieve this, we have forgotten the art of eating healthy. On July 27th, Greenpeace launched its Waste to Food campaign, which directly links the waste that we produce, to the food that we consume in our day to day lives.

India has an ambitious plan to generate 100 GW solar and 75 GW wind energy by 2022, in line with its national commitments to the Paris Agreement. Achieving these targets will greatly reduce our dependence on coal-based power plants that cause significant carban emissions. Solar is currently cheaper than coal, its cost has plummeted drastically over the last few years while the prices of coal-based power have been rising.

Year ends are always a time of reflection. 2014 has, by and large, been a sea of high and low tides at Greenpeace India, In June 2014, following an alleged report by the Intelligence Bureau which called us anti-national and anti-development, Indian Government restricted our lawful access to the funds that we receive from our international donars. This was a direct attack on democracy and our fundamental right to free speech.

Our values are an inseparable part of our work culture and our campaigns that subsequently help us in effective lobbing and to tackle authorities.

Exasperation leads to effective campaigning. This statement is true in every sense of the word. “What’s all the fuss about solar power and renewable energy off late?” I’m sure this question has at some point crossed your mind. At the risk of sounding repetitive, the current rate at which we’re going, there isn’t going to be much energy left in the near future. With the rampant destruction of our planet’s natural resources on an alarming rise, the time to act is now. It doesn’t take a fancy formula to deduce that we’re burning up more than we can replenish. It’s a simple case where the supply is not meeting the demand. Luckily for us though, there is a solution at hand - one that’s as old as time. The Sun.

Have you noticed the relatively recent change of events taking place around us? The perpetual quest for power is revealing its dark side. The irony of it all is that we call ourselves 'modern' but yet resort to archaic means of attaining energy - clearing forests to mine for coal. Given the dismal track record, this is clearly not the solution to a growing demand.

In the recent past, you must have read about our Prime Minister raising the spectre of “foreign hand” which is supposedly behind protests against nuclear energy and GM food. By doing this, the Prima Minister dismissed out concerns and created a smokescreen to undermine both nuclear and food safety of 1.2 billion of us.
It’s no coincidence that the PMs statements come even as the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India bill and the rules under the Nuclear Suppliers Liability Act are due to be introduced in the Parliament. Both are seen as critical by the real foreign hand: giant American agrotech companies and the French, US and Russian nuclear industries. [Download the full report in PDF]
What do the issues of safe food and risky nuclear power have in common? A lot, as it turns out. We’ve spent a good part of the last few months fighting two proposed laws. The Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill will create a single-window body to clear all genetically modified (GM) crops in India. The Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage bill will let corporations supply risky nuclear technology to India without bearing the financial or legal burden of potential accidents.
