A chemical intensive model of agriculture
was introduced in India in the 1960s as
part of the Green Revolution. This model
and the supporting government policies,
such as the chemical fertiliser subsidy
policy, provoked indiscriminate use of
chemicals. This has not only led to
deterioration of the environment but also
degraded and contaminated the natural
resources base, and is now posing a
threat to human health.
