Pole and Line Fishing

Pole and line fishing is a traditional method of fishing, unchanged for generations, and often used by local fishers in coastal communities, such as the Maldives and Indonesia. Using live bait, the fishing targets surface schooling skipjack.

Fish Aggregation Devices

Much of the world’s tuna is caught using purse seine nets with FADs. FADs used with purse seine nets are associated with high by-catch rates of juvenile yellowfin and bigeye tuna, but also high by-catch of sharks and even turtles.

Long Lines

Most of the world’s longline fishing is also conducted without the use of by-catch mitigation techniques, resulting in up to 30% of the catch consisting of unwanted and often endangered species such as sharks and turtles.
