The Esperanza films in the Arctic Ocean

The Esperanza sits in the Arctic Ocean against a floe of sea ice north of Svalbard. The ship stopped here to launch an ROV (remote Operated Vehicle) to film life in the ocean and the sea bed under the ice. Follow the Esperanza via its webcam.

Crew members standing on deck of the Esperanza help lift a 'bag' out of the water which has been removed from one of the nine 'mesocosms' in Kongsfjord. Each bag is pulled from the sea and neatly packed away on deck ready to be taken back to Kiel.

We'd like to believe the polar bear on this photo, taken in August 2009, is just as happy today as news came in that drilling at BP's Liberty project in the Arctic has been delayed.
