UPDATE OCT 2: Today, 13 activists and a freelance video journalist were formally charged with piracy under Article 227 of the Russian Criminal Code. The maximum sentence, if convicted, is 15 years in a Russian jail. Greenpeace International expects a further 15 activists and a Russian freelance photojournalist will appear in front of the Russian Investigative Committee in coming days. On Thursday Sep 26, in a court in Murmansk, Russia, the Arctic 30 were seen by six judges. No charges were laid, but all 30 are still being detained; 22 are being held for two months as Russian authorities pursue an investigation around piracy charges while eight were to await a new hearing.

The eight people, activist Dima Litvinov (SE/US), activist Sini Saarela (FI), activist Faiza Oulahsen (NL), Activist Anthony Perrett (UK), crew member from Ukraine, activist Frank Hewetson (UK), activist Mannes Ubels (NL) and Ana Paula Alminhana Maciel (Brazilian), had a second hearing on Sunday Sep 29. All were to be held in custody almost two months, until November 24.
