Like a tap that’s been left running, ongoing oil spills on land in Russia have polluted rivers, the sea and countryside, imposing extreme hardship on the everyday life of the inhabitants of the Komi Republic.

Once an area where inhabitants could catch fish and had access to fresh, running water from streams and rivers, the area is being ruined by the oil companies' quest for black gold.

The oil lies oil lies everywhere in the landscape as damaged pipelines gush oil directly into the rivers, suffocating life, and the trees are left dead and black.

Zhenya Belyakova and Jon Burgwald from Greenpeace recently visited the region on invitation from the area’s Indigenous inhabitants, the Komi people.
